Ever noticed how leftists have this bizarre hate boner for the ‘50s? Any modern lefty media set there is always about how the fathers were all abusive alcoholics and everyone was super evil and racist.

Domestic violence was actually high in the 1950s and there wasn't any way for women (and men) to really talk about it. "The left" choose to use this piece of information to paint the eras ideals as completely wrong/flawed, ignoring the fact that the men of that time had just returned from the biggest war in human history and now had to uphold a family while pretending that the war hadn't deeply affected them. The amount of men walking around with untreated PTSD and combat induced mental disorders was probably staggering, you don't come back from something like the Philippines Campaign and filter into society with zero help. British pilots who served in The Battle of Britain were all hailed as iron willed warriors, where as we now know that most of them had serious PTSD and suicide rates were high throughout and after the war.

I'm not a domestic violence apologist but that's the reason why it was so prevalent. It is incredibly disrespectful to the men who were genuinely good husbands/fathers of that era because "the left" paint them all as patriarchal monsters.

Think about what a man born in the US in 1900 potentially live through. At 18 years old he was eligible to be drafted in WW1. Came home in 1919. Went through the Spanish flu outbreak immediately afterwards. Then prohibition, so there goes the "traditional" method for stress relief. Then he probably lost his job on the depression in 1929. Then WW2 kicks off and at 40 years old he was eligible to be drafted AGAIN.
In late 1942 they dropped the upper limit on draft ages from 45 to 37 when the army noticed they had accidentally drafted WW1 vets again, but he still had to live through rationing.

It's even worse if you were a man born in Europe. There's no dodging the wars either way then.

So remember our great grandparents lived through some shit.

Don't forget the dust bowl in the 30s! And the fact that his father or grandfather was likely conscripted into the civil war!

People truly don't realize just how fucking awful life was not very long ago. It's why it's so very, very difficult to take people seriously when they think the world is literally ending because abortion is getting slightly less accessible. Yes honey, nobody has ever had it as hard as you.

I forgot the dust bowl, but then again, I'm from the slav lands originally, mine had the wars in Poland and Ukraine in the 20s, and the russian civil war bullshit to deal with.

I know the kids don't have it as good as they imagine the boomers had it, and I feel for them, but history didn't begin in 1945.

There's a reason the people born in the 1890s and 1900s are called the Lost generation.

It's not just the 50's I've seen them pull the same routine with the 80's and 90's, The general vibe seems to be even the suggestion that maybe some things were better before is anathema.
