I just recalled the right word to use in this context then.
Berdache: Among certain Native American peoples, a person, usually a male, who assumes the gender identity and is granted the social status of the opposite sex.
Berdache is a dated and offensive term for an American Indian who cross-dresses and assumes the opposite sex role.
This was in use until the sanitized version « two spirited » came on scene in 1990s.
