An Illinois restaurant owner was caught on video closely following a customer down the street and chastising them, furious that they didn’t leave a tip on their $20 meal.

The heated showdown exploded outside ramen shop Table to Stix in downtown Evanston on Saturday, April 19, when owner Kenny Chou turned the quiet block into a battleground, storming after the diner in a now-viral video. Chou sprinted after the unidentified customer who left a $20 bill to cover his $19.89 meal with no additional tip, calling him a “piece of s–t.”

Kenny Chou was caught yelling at a customer for not tipping in a wild viral video. He is shown gesturing at the patron as he follows the unidentified customer for several blocks. The customer questioned why Chou continued to follow him down the street. Chou responded with “18%,” the tip amount he expected to be given.

“I paid for my food. I handed you $20. You cannot charge more than what you paid, so what are you talking about?” the customer said in the wild clip.

“What do you want? I paid for my food!” the man repeats as Chou trails him.
As the video continues and Chou does not stop following the customer, the annoyed customer demands that Chou “get the f–k back,” asking that he call the police if he wants to escalate the situation.

The owner berated the customer and threatened to get the police involved until the customer snapped back: “I paid for my food. I paid you $20. I am not legally required to give you a f–king tip.”

A belligerent Chou shrieked, “I’ll smack the s–t out of you, you punka– s–thead.”
“Shut your goddam f–king mouth. How are my staff supposed to make money? I’ll slap the s–t out of you!” he continued to yell.

Table to Stix, which had overwhelmingly positive reviews praising its ramen noodle bowls and cozy vibes, has since been flooded with bad reviews and was subject to a protest claiming that the video — which has racked up over 1.3 million views on X, as well as Instagram — displayed anti-black harassment.

On Saturday, Chou apologized for his behavior, acknowledging that he was driven to rage by frustration over the struggling business.

“It was a deeply regrettable moment where I, Kenny Chou, lost my composure,” Chou said during a protest outside of his restaurant. “I stepped far beyond the bounds of respect and decency.”
Chou gave a tearful apology after the video went viral, according to CBS News Chicago.

Since the video went viral, Yelp froze the restaurant’s page over the flooding of negative comments, and Chou took down the ramen joint’s phone line and social media accounts.

He has also attempted to make amends, sending the customer’s brother his favorite meal free of charge, as well as a handwritten apology.

“I apologize to him and to his family, and I was just asking if he could pass this message along to his little brother,” Chou told CBS News Chicago.

Some residents are now boycotting the ramen shop, according to local media reports.
However, the Evanston Police Department confirmed that an investigation into harassment is ongoing. Neighbors and students at nearby Northwestern University continue to boycott the noodle shop.

When asked after the clip went viral why he didn’t tip, the customer didn’t mince words: “Oh, I just didn’t want to.”

What amuses me about this is the way the article dances around the customer’s identity, and the owner’s contrite backdown after being accused of racism… then the reason the ‘customer’ gave for not tipping.

$20 for ramen? I can get that shit for $0.20 at the grocery store.
Agree, but I'm willing to pay in the $15-20 range if it's got the good bits added, pork cutlet, octopus tentacles, crab meat, those little radishes with the spiral in them, egg. I understand adding value. But when I know the base ingredient is like you said, 20 cents of dehydrated flour, you don't get to follow me out of the store 3 blocks yelling at me about the cost. Amazing that a restaurant owner can look this bad against a stereotypical black diner that doesn't tip in Chicago. In fact, the article even says he left a $20 bill, that's 11 cents extra, he didn't care about the change. That's officially a small tip.

It could well be that he got more than just a single bowl of ramen. The article mentions the ‘non-tipping customer’s younger brother so it’s possible the tip-stiffer was in company and had two bowls plus maybe some sides.

He still only spent 20 dollars on a meal. 10 percent of that is two dollars. This wasn't a thousand-dollar bill for a party of six, this was two niggas gettin' they dragonball soups. What does Kenny expect, 50 percent tipping?

About 50 community members held a protest outside Table to Stix Ramen Saturday after the restaurant’s owner followed and threatened a Black patron who declined to leave an additional tip on his meal on April 19. A video of the dispute went viral shortly after.

The protesters alleged the incident was racially motivated and demanded accountability from Table to Stix owner Kenny Chou. While many called on Chou to publicly apologize for the incident, others wanted more.

“I’m not really here for no apology,” said Carolyn Ruff, who organized the protest. “I’m here to shut this (restaurant) down.”

The video, which has garnered over 1.2 million views on X, shows Chou shouting expletives and threatening language at the patron. Ruff called Chou’s actions “racist,” “humiliating” and “inhumane.”

Community members also expressed dissatisfaction with Chou’s approach to reconciliation so far. While Chou apologized on CBS News Chicago on Thursday, many protesters wished he had spoken directly to Evanston’s Black residents.

On Saturday, Chou apologized again, weathering vocal criticism from the protestors.

“It was a deeply regrettable moment where I, Kenny Chou, lost my composure,” Chou said. “I stepped far beyond the bounds of respect and decency.”

Still, many protesters said this apology did not go far enough.

Speakers like community activist Meleika Gardner said they hoped for more concrete action from Chou.

“This isn’t about cancel culture,” Gardner said. “It’s about consequence culture. It’s not about awareness — it’s about accountability.”

Others called for direct action from Evanston’s overall Asian population. Several attendees spoke about the need to combat anti-Black racism in non-Black communities of color.

Many speakers, including Gardner, highlighted the historical solidarity between Asian and Black civil rights activists and said Black activism paved the way for the liberation of all minority groups.

“It was Black hands, Black backs, Black blood that fought, often alone, to tear down the walls of injustice in this country,” Gardner said. “And because of that sacrifice, doors were opened.”

Community organizer William Carter voiced his concern that closing the restaurant could negatively impact Chou’s employees who were not involved in the incident and instead argued Chou himself should face criminal charges.

Although she did not attend the protest, the patron’s mother seemed to agree.

Rev. Michael Nabors of Evanston’s Second Baptist Church said the patron’s mother didn’t want the restaurant to close and added it had been the family’s “go-to for ramen in Evanston” for nearly a decade.

Nabors read a letter from the patron’s mother addressed to Chou, asking him to imagine the patron had been his own son.

“Would you want criminal charges put upon that person? It is to this logical and evidential extent that you should be held to the applicable and justified legal standards for your action,” the letter read.

Some protesters criticized Mayor Daniel Biss’ absence and requested City Council take action. While Biss was not in attendance, Ald. Jonathan Nieuwsma (4th) was present and spoke, calling the incident “unacceptable” and expressing his desire for a peaceful resolution.

Nieuwsma previously told The Daily he had been in contact with Chou after the incident to offer his help. The incident also appeared on the agenda of Thursday’s Equity and Empowerment Commission meeting, with the item labeled as “Community concerns regarding an incident at a local business.”

While the protesters were divided on the best way to move forward, speakers remained unified in their calls to center the needs of Evanston’s Black residents.

“This moment doesn’t belong to Mr. Chou. It belongs to us, the Black community,” Gardner said. “It belongs to us, and whether we accept his apology or not, we remain the ones who define the terms of the repair.”

What’s especially ironic about this is tipping doesn’t even exist in Japan. Also the ramen there would be like $5. American restaurant culture has become out of hand with ridiculous prices for mediocre food.

Tipping is retarded and we should just get rid of it.

Aw jeez I was so ready to post this gladly and then I learned it was a nigger thing. If you don't wanna tip, don't eat. If I go out to a restaurant with people, I don't eat. If there's coffee, I'll maybe tip. If I drink a beer, ill round up or give a lil something. But going to a full on sit down restaurant and "paying for dah foohd" and turning it into a a massive race grift? TND.
“It was Black hands, Black backs, Black blood that fought, often alone, to tear down the walls of injustice in this country,” Gardner said. “And because of that sacrifice, doors were opened.”
Imagine getting this cover ran for you because you violated social norms? Must be nice

What a cunt.
“This moment doesn’t belong to Mr. Chou. It belongs to us, the Black community,” Gardner said. “It belongs to us, and whether we accept his apology or not, we remain the ones who define the terms of the repair.”
Total nigger death.
