An Illinois restaurant owner was caught on video closely following a customer down the street and chastising them, furious that they didn’t leave a tip on their $20 meal.

The heated showdown exploded outside ramen shop Table to Stix in downtown Evanston on Saturday, April 19, when owner Kenny Chou turned the quiet block into a battleground, storming after the diner in a now-viral video. Chou sprinted after the unidentified customer who left a $20 bill to cover his $19.89 meal with no additional tip, calling him a “piece of s–t.”

Kenny Chou was caught yelling at a customer for not tipping in a wild viral video. He is shown gesturing at the patron as he follows the unidentified customer for several blocks. The customer questioned why Chou continued to follow him down the street. Chou responded with “18%,” the tip amount he expected to be given.

“I paid for my food. I handed you $20. You cannot charge more than what you paid, so what are you talking about?” the customer said in the wild clip.

“What do you want? I paid for my food!” the man repeats as Chou trails him.
As the video continues and Chou does not stop following the customer, the annoyed customer demands that Chou “get the f–k back,” asking that he call the police if he wants to escalate the situation.

The owner berated the customer and threatened to get the police involved until the customer snapped back: “I paid for my food. I paid you $20. I am not legally required to give you a f–king tip.”

A belligerent Chou shrieked, “I’ll smack the s–t out of you, you punka– s–thead.”
“Shut your goddam f–king mouth. How are my staff supposed to make money? I’ll slap the s–t out of you!” he continued to yell.

Table to Stix, which had overwhelmingly positive reviews praising its ramen noodle bowls and cozy vibes, has since been flooded with bad reviews and was subject to a protest claiming that the video — which has racked up over 1.3 million views on X, as well as Instagram — displayed anti-black harassment.

On Saturday, Chou apologized for his behavior, acknowledging that he was driven to rage by frustration over the struggling business.

“It was a deeply regrettable moment where I, Kenny Chou, lost my composure,” Chou said during a protest outside of his restaurant. “I stepped far beyond the bounds of respect and decency.”
Chou gave a tearful apology after the video went viral, according to CBS News Chicago.

Since the video went viral, Yelp froze the restaurant’s page over the flooding of negative comments, and Chou took down the ramen joint’s phone line and social media accounts.

He has also attempted to make amends, sending the customer’s brother his favorite meal free of charge, as well as a handwritten apology.

“I apologize to him and to his family, and I was just asking if he could pass this message along to his little brother,” Chou told CBS News Chicago.

Some residents are now boycotting the ramen shop, according to local media reports.
However, the Evanston Police Department confirmed that an investigation into harassment is ongoing. Neighbors and students at nearby Northwestern University continue to boycott the noodle shop.

When asked after the clip went viral why he didn’t tip, the customer didn’t mince words: “Oh, I just didn’t want to.”

'It's too expensive so I can't tip'. The reason most restaurants fail is because the margins are razor thin. Anyone who has ever been involved in the industry knows this, it's why alcohol is price gouged at restaurants - to make up for the fact that the food isn't. If we 'paid the worker a good wage' you simply wouldn't be able to afford to eat there at all, as the price would go up higher than 20%. The restaurant would literally go under if it tried to absorb the cost of server wages without raising prices.

Tipping is like putting the grocery carts back or staying to the right if you aren't passing. It's a simple rule that makes life better and easier for everyone if everyone follows it - it allows you to give direct monetary feedback to the quality of service that you received. If the person had absolutely shit service and you don't tip that's fine - it's what the system is for. If you receive good service and don't tip, you are the moral equivalent of a nigger who throws his trash on the ground, drives 45 miles an hour in the left lane, or leaves his shopping cart next to his parking spot - ruining a good system because you're selfish, spiteful and stupid. Another part of the system working is shaming such people, and this is exactly what this fuming chink did. He did the moral equivalent of honking at the asshole holding up traffic. The 'black community' can go fuck itself - tip or don't eat out you lazy niggers.

As a Euro I will never understand U.S. tipping culture and the fierce defense of it. I can perhaps understand the act as a polite acknowledgement of a waiter's outstanding efforts-- if there was actual above-average effort involved-- but definitely not as an obligation to pay extra for the sake of paying extra.

Being angry at tipping was my gateway drug into accepting my age. In my sandals, cargo shorts and t-shirt as I stare at the self serve kiosk screen with my lunch order on it that defaults to a 25% tip for the service staff that doesn't exist except to carry my order out from the back and place it unceremoniously on a counter for me to grab. I don't tip at all unless it's a traditional service anymore.

Then you must never eat out. European restaurants are infamous for charging for water and bread that you never ordered and stealthily adding service charges (i.e. a mandatory tip) and “table setting” fees to the bill.
I eat out almost daily. What you describe only happens in tourist trap areas, because the owners correctly assume tourists are unfamiliar with the local laws.

He should never have apologized and instead double down calling him a retarded nigger.

Yes, it was stupid to chase someone down for not tipping, but it was way more dumb to apologize for it. Unironically, blasting out racial slurs in media might have got him more customers.

Dude, if you get a nigger who doesn’t tip? Just make his food insanely shitty next time and put zero effort into it. And if black people are killing your profits that bad, put a mandatory gratuity charge until they leave and never come back again, then remove it.

Waiterw like it because their sub minimum wage + tips usually pays better than regular minimum wage. Their base hourly pay is $6-ish, but with tips that can turn into $20-$80 per hour. Why would they want to legalize raising it to a normal minimum wage of $15? The most I've seen personally is a college friend who earned $1K over a weekend. It's in both owners and servers financial interest to preserve tipping culture. In MA people voted against increasing server base pay, assuming that this would decrease the amount of tips. if anyone deserves a raise, it's probably the cooks.

No, I don't tip, no, you service-cucks won't do anything to my food. I'll tip you if you get down on your hands and knees and beg me for the extra cash, or suck me off. Otherwise take it up with your boss ahahahhahaahahaaa.

A tip is an added extra on the meal that theoretically makes you feel better. I don't feel like paying it, much in the same way I don't feel like paying for anything else I didn't order.

Oh people acknowledge it, they just do it in the kitchen. No one wants to take a black table, servers will do anything to wiggle out of servingou them. If you think no tipping is bad wait until they try to pay with food stamps and they inevitable chimp out when you tell them they can't. Asians and foreigners don't tip either but they don't spark the instant dread a black table does.
It's common joke that nothing makes you a racist quicker than working in a restaurant.
Anyone who has not worked in food service has no idea how accurate this really is. Nothing will make you hate Mexicans more than their whole "familia" of 50 fucking people coming in and destroying the whole fucking resturant and leaving no tip at all. And then having them fight with you in broken, barely comprehensible English as they try to split the check 30 different ways. You're probably thinking "oh thats 50 paying customers". No nigger, half of them are doing whatever "all you can eat" option is available, and sharing it with half the fucking table and you can't do shit about it because: a. you sure as fuck don't get paid enough for this bullshit, or b. they know English but will play stupid and give you a "que?" when you try to enforce the rules of your establishment. My time in food service leaves me hoping every last illegal beaner tossed back over the border gets brutally murdered by the cartel. I fucking despise them.

Like mentioned ealier in the thread, blacks will straight up run you ragged, expect 5 star fucking service for themselves exclusively, chimp out over fucking nothing, and will very likely steal the tips off other tables. Asians and Jews may as well be the same fuckin' thing when it comes to food service. Do you get shitty white people too? Yes, obviously, but its nowhere close to the same level of consistant shit behavior as you get from fucking minorities.

Is anyone else getting tip screens when paying at non-food retail stores? You know, when you have to do the self-pay by clicking your card on the little terminal?

I got asked for a tip at a clothing store the other day, when I bought a cheap T shirt and a greeting card. Retailers say, "Oh, that screen has to come up because the terminal always..." but the store chooses their settings including whether the screen comes up at all.
Seemingly every low grade place nowadays wants a tip for basic fucking work. It's both millennials/zoomer thinking it's appropriate and corporate cheapening out.

Fucking horseshit. If your business can't support itself without tips then it should close down or optimise itself.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone proposed a fixed wage of (IIRC) $35/hr for servers at Casa Bonita with no tips, and the servers rejected it.

Amen to that.

The amount of retardation in this whole situation is vile and dire.

Tipping is for exceptional service, but it's gone so far that we've normalized goddamn SUBWAY having tipping options on it's POS. Fuck off.

And you idiots crying about niggers should unironically kill yourselves. Find a car and a garage and run that bastard with the door and windows down while listening to your favorite album. This monkey paid for his crappy food with real money and left without making a scene; what, you wanted him to suck the owner off as well? You're about as bright as the bitch going on about black backs and black blood fighting injustice, and about as shrill.

"HOW MUH STAFF GON MAKE MONEY?" How about you pay them, nip? You follow and threaten to slap the shit out of a paying customer because he didn't shine your balls? You should've been shot in the street right there.

Fuck everyone involved in this unctuous display of entitlement.
We get it, you're a hotel chair enthusiast and your woman has a queen of spades tattoo.

Tipping needs to stop. An idea made to improve businesses has become a method to fuck over the consumer
I shouldn't have to subsidize your employee's wages. If you blow me away, sure I'll tip, but if you bring me something that's only barely edible, or I'm going somewhere that's "fast food"; then fuck no, no tip. Even the last time I was at Subway they were up my ass for either a 20% or 30% tip. Get fucked sandwich jockeys.

This. I’m glad based black man did this because it pulls back the curtain on how abused tips are. Tipping used to be a bonus for good work. Now, EVERY FUCKING BUSINESS wants a tip.
  • cup of coffee to go? TIP
  • a box of low-grade food at a food court? TIP
  • delivery for pizza? You’d better fucking tip before they even step out of the restaurant to start moving. No more tip at the point delivery for fast service.
  • food at a drive thru? TIP
  • food delivery app? TIP+delivery fee+random bogus bullshit
FVCK TIPPING!!! ADJUST YOUR MENU PRICES TO PROPERLY PAY YOUR EMPLOYEES AND STOP HIDING THE COST THROUGH TIPS!!! YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO EXTRA MONEY!!! TAX ALL TIPS!!! BETTER YET, BAN ALL TIPS!!!

It certainly can be that lucrative at times, but then there are other times when it's completely dead and you get sent home early having made essentially no money for the day. Many waiters and waitresses are junkies and fuck ups who can't think beyond their next 10 minutes. It's not surprising that they wouldn't see the value of having some stability and consistency in their pay.

Yeah, tipping only makes sense in the context of service that can vary in competence so good service can be rewarded. Someone handing you a coffee or a sandwich isn't that.

Fucking horseshit. If your business can't support itself without tips then it should close down or optimise itself.
Either one of two things are true:

A. You are unable to pay the price of the meal +20% and that's why you don't tip.
You wouldn't be eating out at the restaurant if they eliminated tips and raised prices to compensate, so your 'advice' that they do so is horseshit.

B. You are able to pay the price of meal +20% but simply see an opportunity to be a freeloader in a high-trust system and are justifying it to yourself post-hoc.
You are a nigger/Jew/Chinese

The only difference between these two scenarios are:

1. You will probably be paying more than +20% if tips are eliminated so there is no price parity, assuming that there will be is me giving you the benefit of the doubt.

2. With tips you can pay less if you feel like the service was subpar, thus punishing bad service. If you want to see what a system looks like where you can't do this, eat out in Europe. The servers are much more rude and less accommodating.
