An Illinois restaurant owner was caught on video closely following a customer down the street and chastising them, furious that they didn’t leave a tip on their $20 meal.

The heated showdown exploded outside ramen shop Table to Stix in downtown Evanston on Saturday, April 19, when owner Kenny Chou turned the quiet block into a battleground, storming after the diner in a now-viral video. Chou sprinted after the unidentified customer who left a $20 bill to cover his $19.89 meal with no additional tip, calling him a “piece of s–t.”

Kenny Chou was caught yelling at a customer for not tipping in a wild viral video. He is shown gesturing at the patron as he follows the unidentified customer for several blocks. The customer questioned why Chou continued to follow him down the street. Chou responded with “18%,” the tip amount he expected to be given.

“I paid for my food. I handed you $20. You cannot charge more than what you paid, so what are you talking about?” the customer said in the wild clip.

“What do you want? I paid for my food!” the man repeats as Chou trails him.
As the video continues and Chou does not stop following the customer, the annoyed customer demands that Chou “get the f–k back,” asking that he call the police if he wants to escalate the situation.

The owner berated the customer and threatened to get the police involved until the customer snapped back: “I paid for my food. I paid you $20. I am not legally required to give you a f–king tip.”

A belligerent Chou shrieked, “I’ll smack the s–t out of you, you punka– s–thead.”
“Shut your goddam f–king mouth. How are my staff supposed to make money? I’ll slap the s–t out of you!” he continued to yell.

Table to Stix, which had overwhelmingly positive reviews praising its ramen noodle bowls and cozy vibes, has since been flooded with bad reviews and was subject to a protest claiming that the video — which has racked up over 1.3 million views on X, as well as Instagram — displayed anti-black harassment.

On Saturday, Chou apologized for his behavior, acknowledging that he was driven to rage by frustration over the struggling business.

“It was a deeply regrettable moment where I, Kenny Chou, lost my composure,” Chou said during a protest outside of his restaurant. “I stepped far beyond the bounds of respect and decency.”
Chou gave a tearful apology after the video went viral, according to CBS News Chicago.

Since the video went viral, Yelp froze the restaurant’s page over the flooding of negative comments, and Chou took down the ramen joint’s phone line and social media accounts.

He has also attempted to make amends, sending the customer’s brother his favorite meal free of charge, as well as a handwritten apology.

“I apologize to him and to his family, and I was just asking if he could pass this message along to his little brother,” Chou told CBS News Chicago.

Some residents are now boycotting the ramen shop, according to local media reports.
However, the Evanston Police Department confirmed that an investigation into harassment is ongoing. Neighbors and students at nearby Northwestern University continue to boycott the noodle shop.

When asked after the clip went viral why he didn’t tip, the customer didn’t mince words: “Oh, I just didn’t want to.”

Uh huh, so how do restaurants in Europe and Asia where tipping doesn't exist survive?
They don’t have black people being a pain in the ass and making serving miserable. It’s like those unmanned buy/leave stores in Japan. It can’t exist in America. Also in Europe they have base wages which level between “I need a second job.” And “ow my asshole hurts.”
You run a restaurant and have a choice: patrons that don't tip as much as you'd like but still show up, or fewer patrons because they follow your insipid idea above. Which do you pick?
Investing in a big vending machine/robot system that removes human interaction. Sitting down at my bar? Lmao, eat shit. Grab your warm beer and cold burrito from the abuse proof vending hole after running your card on the scanner. Eat outside on a picnic table away from my property, nigger.

And you know done dumb nigga will try to fight the vending machine and hobos will try to jack off in it or something, so you gotta clean that shit daily, still. But it’s still far better than attempting to romance the dinning experience or form a community.

Dude, if you get a nigger who doesn’t tip? Just make his food insanely shitty next time and put zero effort into it. And if black people are killing your profits that bad, put a mandatory gratuity charge until they leave and never come back again, then remove it.
You act as if they wouldn't just get up and walk out on the tab if that's the case. all the seafood places here have a section if not an entiee wall plastered with photos of ratchet ass hoes and their bum bfs.

and that's the best case because its pain fre.. the other thing they do is send back food over and over while making a scene until you comp them. And even if you comp them i've seen bitches pour all their drinks on the floor on the way out the door over alleged bad service. Cherry on top, since its a non violent low dollar amount, they're long gone before the cops bother to pull up (if at all) so there's no consequence. and since restuarants are cheap and/or retarded, you get incredibly pixelated photos of the suspects.

If you are slapping a 20 dollar tag on a 50 cent bowl of ramen (with cooking maybe a dollar), and you're still barely scraping by, you got bigger problems than one nigger not giving you gastro gibs.
Which fucking expense is eating up all the revenue because it sure as shit isn't the food. And since they don't pay the staff enough to live off of, it ain't the wages either.
Rent, insurance, electricity, water, labor (cooks), wasted food due to spoilage (no restaurant perfectly predicts the amount of food they need and running out is worse than overstocking). The noodles are one ingredient in ramen, and expensive ramen usually uses fresh noodles which are not the same thing as Maruchen. Real ramen also often involves eggs, pork belly, ground meet for the broth, fish cakes, and vegetables. The difference between the price of a bowl of ramen and the ingredients has to cover all that overhead + wages, and the difference is what the owner takes home. In most restaurants, on the menu items those margins are very thin and the owners of Asian restaurants frequented by ghetto niggers are not exactly known for their lavish lifestyles.
False dichotomy. There’s a third option: You are able to pay the price plus tip but don’t want to because the principle behind tipping has become extremely corrupted to the point that the service industry believes they’re owed a tip for existing.
It's not a third option. If the person gave shitty service, there's nothing wrong with stiffing them. Stiffing everyone is just treating the servers who actually do try and provide good service the same way as those who don't, so it's encouraging the very behavior you claim to be against. It's the old story of the Soviet cab driver who gets the same reward whether he actually drives customers or not - due to the incentives, he's not going to drive people because the outcome for him is the exact same as it would be if he actually exerted himself.

Yeah, tipping only makes sense in the context of service that can vary in competence so good service can be rewarded. Someone handing you a coffee or a sandwich isn't that.

Either one of two things are true:

A. You are unable to pay the price of the meal +20% and that's why you don't tip.
You wouldn't be eating out at the restaurant if they eliminated tips and raised prices to compensate, so your 'advice' that they do so is horseshit.

B. You are able to pay the price of meal +20% but simply see an opportunity to be a freeloader in a high-trust system and are justifying it to yourself post-hoc.
You are a nigger/Jew/Chinese

The only difference between these two scenarios are:

1. You will probably be paying more than +20% if tips are eliminated so there is no price parity, assuming that there will be is me giving you the benefit of the doubt.

2. With tips you can pay less if you feel like the service was subpar, thus punishing bad service. If you want to see what a system looks like where you can't do this, eat out in Europe. The servers are much more rude and less accommodating.
A high trust society wouldn't hide extra costs under the hood to trick people who don't expect 20% extra tax. That's literally what happens in third world shitholes. I didn't see a difference between European and USA waiters (barring the occasional small towns that don't treat you like shit), and Japan is a counter example with high quality service with no tips.

And let's be frank here. Tipping is more dependent on the waitress looks than her abilities. An extremely capable male waiter will receive a fraction of the shitty big titted waitress.

“This isn’t about cancel culture,” Gardner said. “It’s about consequence culture. It’s not about awareness — it’s about accountability.”

Just say what you mean, The guy pissed you off so you want to destroy his business. Struggle session language is so weak and dishonest.

That's not a bad concept, but it's not a restaurant either. It may very well be the future, but in the current time with how restaurants work, do you want A) fewer tips or B) fewer patrons? I was responding to someone making an idiotic point that if you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out, pointing out what that realistically means for a restaurant owner.

This dim asian fucked himself, hurling abuse at someone that paid for his services in full while on camera. If he'd given the black guy shit for not tipping without being recorded while still in the restaurant, he'd simply be ensuring that one customer is unlikely to come back. Doing what he did ensures more people won't even give his establishment a first try.

Literally everyone in the US knows that this is expected, even the people who refuse to do so. Tourists maybe might not understand but that's true in every country with different customs. In France I tipped on those occasions where I had exceptional service before someone explained to me that it isn't done there in the same way.

Japan has a very unique work culture that isn't really replicated anywhere else and isn't really better when you look at their awful society-wide outcomes (absentee fathers who are always at work, cratering reproduction rates, feelings of isolation).

The market speaks. And not always. I know a lot of people in the service industry and men still clean up on a good night if they can do their job with a smile. The most well-tipped waitress at one place I went to was an enormous black woman who just had a stellar attitude and provided exceptional service despite not being much of a looker. Another girl was hot but with a shitty attitude and didn't make nearly as much. Looks matter when all else is equal, but I still think that attitude is far more important.

You’re exactly right. European service and American service is basically the same quality. People who are saying European service is bad either went to some shitty tourist traps or didn’t bother at all to even try to use the language or learn any local customs beforehand.

Asia generally has better service than America and no tipping is expected. It’s not only just Japan. The service in Mainland China was kind of crappy IME (higher end places in China actually did have good service, albeit with ‘Chinese characteristics’), but that’s because it’s a freaking Communist country. When we’re expected to tip 18% (when it used to be 10%) and the service is maybe slightly better than what you’d get in a Communist country, your culture is fucking broken.

If people stop going to restaurants because they can't afford to tip, the restaurants don't move product, and if they don't move product they close.

You run a restaurant and have a choice: patrons that don't tip as much as you'd like but still show up, or fewer patrons because they follow your insipid idea above. Which do you pick?
Then go to McDonalds, nigga. Sit down restaurants have always worked on a tipping system. Workers get paid less than min wage since people understood tips made up their wages. This has never been a hard concept until recently. Don't want to tip a server? Go to fucking McDonald's

I wish this stupid myth would fucking die and anyone who’s been a server should agree with me. Waiting is a coveted job by the unskilled because you make bank on tips. In the rare circumstance where you don’t (like when the restaurant is failing) nearly every state has some kind of protection laws to ensure a minimum wage is paid. California, for example, doesn’t even let waiters get paid less than minimum. They get California level minimum wage at the hourly rate PLUS tips, and these faggots still have the audacity to bitch and moan that people only gave them 15% and that 20% should be the ‘minimum’.

Plus the idea that restaurants need these sorts of customers to survive could only be held by someone who knows nothing about the industry. Jews? Maybe you tolerate them because they do order food and pay for the food, you just try to pawn the table off on the new server because you know they won't tip. Niggers? Any restaurant that could ban them, would. They often ruin the ambience, try to get meals comped, throw a fit, expect to be treated like the Queen of Sheba, and then don't tip on top of it while also not spending much money. An establishment that banned them wouldn't go under, they would get more business because nobody wants to put up with that shit as a diner. It's why they literally had to outlaw racial discrimination in this country - it works.

Maybe have a 'white list' for those black customers who have shown that they can behave+tip. This is also why all the black people are chimping out btw - they recognize this as an attempt to hold them to a higher standard of behavior, and that is the one thing that a nigger cannot abide.

I like how the people who don't want to tip are accused of acting like niggers, when the most common response to people who don't tip is to spit/fuck with their food or treat them like shit, which is top tier nigger behavior.
What's so hard to understand? If you act like a nigger, expect to be treated like one.

I wonder if that business man placed a notice that a 15% or 20% tip is required as is done at many restaurants for parties of 5 or more.

On the down side, we went to the a restaurant once as a family and had the shittiest service we have ever received. All of the food was served cold and slow. The manager didn't give a shit about how bad his business's service was. Fixed tipping policies only work when everyone cares about the quality of service.

It’s the Golden Rule faggot, treat others how you want to be treated. If you break the rule, you get what you deserve.
I do tip actually if they bother giving good service, problem is most servers don't, so I don't bother. They can try getting a real job though if it's too hard and they feel the need to lash out like a melanated individual. :)
