The reason they're upset about this is that if John Lithgow actually sits down and talks to Rowling, they know she'll probably convince him to her side of the argument, given that her position is completely reasonable, sensible and palatable to ordinary people.

Harry Potter is accidentally based. The whole series focuses hard on Defense against Dark Arts training and students are always armed. Basically teaching them to be self reliant so they can dispatch threats on their own. Of course it doesn't work but that's the goal.
