Metroid uses an SNROM board (128k PRG+CHR RAM+PRG RAM). This was necessary because it was an FDS conversion. These boards also included a pad for the optional battery. They could have used SGROM which was this board without the PRG RAM and battery pad but the fact that SNROM was used suggests a battery save was originally intended--Metroid actually doesn't use the PRG RAM for anything nor would it on the FDS because the FDS had no PRG RAM just the normal 40k needed to hold the code and graphics data.

tl;dr they saved $5 by omitting the battery at the last minute to spend $15 on an SRAM that just sits there uselessly
