Homeworld series - Epic space battles with ambient-indian accompaniment

After Deserts of Kharak, I was sure that Blackbird basically had this in the bag, that there was no way they could squander any contribution I made. I was wrong. Dead wrong.

Kickstarter was always a mistake, Giver-of-Will. But I'd like to say that DoK is given to much leeway for what it is: it's an incredibly mediocre RTS with a fairly boring campaign and the narrative is the beginning of what you see here. Mechanically DoK is not bad, but it isn't good either and I've been scratching my head for years why people pardoned such mediocrity from the HW franchise: a two-faction barely original standard RTS with assets taken from another game entirely was good?

The narrative was also a sign of things to come: s'jet wanking, retcons upon retcons, poor attempts at "personal drama", incredibly hamfisted nostalgia bait... DoK wasn't good, you merely wanted it to be good because it had the HW name. HW3 came out and now the king is naked and all can see that there was nothing good even in DoK, it was to be charitable decent at best.

I have absolutely no fucking clue how things could get this bad in the first place.
You remember all those artists on tumblr who drew nothing but "random character but africanized and with vitiligo" and chubby, coffee-colored , rainbow-haired genderblobs?
They graduated. And a bunch of them ended up in the industry. Likewise, the average video game writer operates in an enviroment where fiction must adhere to a million of written and unwritten rules regarding "cultural sesitivity" or "lived experiences" or "portrayal of marginalized groups".
That's why Imogen has a supraorbital ridge like a Russian heavyweight boxer and the cutscenes have NYC/LA demographics. They could've oriented the design of the Hiigarans towards Turkic/Persian/Levantine/Egyptian etc people and given them a consistent look but no, they have to Reflect the World we live in™ (if you live in an American metroplex that is).

And the veteran devs are caught up in this dynamic because that kind of progressivism has no finish line to be reached or an internal stopping mechanism.

That is actually much easier to explain: when Sseth did his video on Hardspace: Shipbreakers, he pointed out that, after coming from early access, the game got a camapign, which was, basically, a communist worker revolution fanfic. Hardspace: Shipbreakers was a Blackbird Interactive project, a sorta spin-off of the old Homeworld - Shipbreaker project, that, ultimately, went nowhere and spawned both the Deserts of Kharack and Hardspace: Shipbreakers. Ssseth's video was from 18.04.2023, but the campaign was implemented earlier, in 24.05.2024 (at least this is what i got gathering info from the wiki and attached articles, if someone was an active player of this game from early access to 1.0 debut, by all means, share your story). It was during this time, when the first negative comments about the idiotic, socialist angle of the camapign were made and, allegedly, were swpt up the Gearbox/Reddit tranny-jannies (i found this Steam discussion, which escaped the jannies eye). Sseth video brought back the discussion about the quality of the writing and general worry about the state of Blackbird writers, who were still working on Homeworld 3. People tried to stay optymistic (myself included) and cope, that they had seperate teams and it will not impact the HW3 story.

Well...........I guess they did not had seperate story writers after all.

What pisses me off, is that i wanted to cross-reference the full game dev roster with the writers from HW3, but i can't find the Hardspace credits sequence on youtube and searching for Hardspace: Shipbreakers devs/dev team gives me this AMA from 4 yeas ago, when game hit the early access and i'm sure as shit they are not the ones, who turned their socialist fanfic into the game's story.

What do these companies stand to gain from this ESG bullshit?
ESG was always cope, it's easy to blame a big scary corporations in ruining games but even if you a writer is forced to have niggers and lesbians in space drama, it could still be well written and not canon defiling.

The issue is that modern writers can only write one story, which is character driven drama where everybody (bar an acceptable target) are a victim of their circumstances. You see it fucking everywhere and it's basically privileged people reflecting on how they aren't at fault for being privileged.

The collector's edition must have had awful sales numbers. Amazon still has it in stock, and they are clearing it out on woot right now for $50. This is $10 cheaper than the current price of the base game on Steam.
Not surprising, given, that the game is pure shit, soundtrack is mediocre and unimaginative and the ship models are of dubious quality (as @Uziel Gal showed earlier in the thread). No one is creating mods for this game either (apart from some simple resource and cap boost, no intro, toggle option etc.) Even Mandy had a flashback on his last stream about the bad experience he had with this game. If you want the spaceships try searching the 3D printing forums for the templates, i'm sure there are some.

I don't know much about Homeworld but I saw this thread and noticed you guys really don't like the Homeworld 3 devs. It might interest you to know I have a writeup about one of the Homeworld 3 devs who was fired after it bombed and went on to ruin one of the Space Station 13 remakes too. Jesse Rougeau has also been featured twice on MATI. As these people become unemployable they're going to to turn to fucking up volunteer projects instead.
Interesting, but not surprising, that Blackbird started employing retarded fetishist, i bet if you would make a deep dive into HW3 writing team alone, half of them would turn out to be some libshit/social- media sperg/hedonist/all of the above, particularly those employed after 2015. I must have forgotten, that Blackbird was co-producing Minecraft Legends, what's compelling though, is i remember, that first round of layoffs at Blackbird happened around January 2024, which is when they ceased development of Minecraft Legends additional content. If he was laid off in January 2024, that means he was still part of the Minecraft team, and was doing HW3 coding on the side, not part of the core team. I was going through HW3 credits on Youtube and i didn't saw his name there, so that confirms my theory.
