UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Waitrose? Fucking Waitrose? There's a Booths in Preston, which is Waitrose but northern and better.

If we're doing hidden gem beaches, Walney Island has miles of beautiful sandy beaches that never have anyone on them as the Furness peninsula is generally marked "here be dragons" on Google maps.
The booths in otley is a dump. Tatty, outdated, grumpy staff and overpriced. I've never understood the appeal.

Some Booths are great, some not so much. I'd shop in them before Waitrose though.

Yorkshire ruins everything.

What are some good beaches in the UK? Wouldn't mind visiting some before I go home. I got tricked into going to Brighton beach, holy fuck what a disappointment.
North east: Whitby, Filey (good fossils) Bridlington,
Wales: rhossili
Scotland: all the ones down the outer Hebrides. Scarista is particularly lovely.
Brighton is hideous, it’s just pebbles. Basically the rule in Britain is the further away from london or Bradford you are the better.

Brighton especially sucks because of the cunts from London who flock there, either as day trippers or to live.

Deli counter is good for cheeses and cooked meats, but I can see that that would be undermined by shit staff. Also find that their made in store ready meals are pretty good if you don't feel like cooking. They're a bit pricey though of course.

To be honest there's a high street semi local to me which has an amazing greengrocers, fishmongers, butchers and bakers. I can get better than booths for a fraction of the cost, while supporting truly independent local businesses and I know how lucky I am because of this.

Absolutely agreed on the staff though. I will boycott anywhere with crappy customer service unless I have no other choice.

Edited to say I hope Labour get their back doors smashed in harder than Starmer takes it from Ali today.

Local to me, big banner hanging on front wall of a house urging people to vote Green has had "apologise for Challenor" spraypainted on it. I swear to god I had nothing to do with this. It happened sometime between when I went to worl last night and on way home this morning.

There's some secluded bays in the Gower peninsula that are tricky to get to so almost always empty and there is no sign of humanity when you're there.

Regardless of how unfit they are for government, Reform remain (for now) the best cudgel to use against the other parties. And, on the assumption that they will take control of at least a couple of councils, there will be the bonus entertainment from watching those councils collapse into infighting. All of which will end up sticking to the party and helping to drag it down in the long run.

Reform are a plant and controlled opposition. They'll be the worst mix of tory and labour and are positioned to be a release valve.

"All the migrants will be deported, Reform will do it! They'll stop the boat people"
Reform - "It will take a while to stop the boats, but we. will. do. it!!"

Several years and an election later...
reform - "We will stop the boat people, just vote harder and we will do it!"

You know I'm right.

*Looks far left*
Labours doing deportations
*looks not quite as left*
Tories want to do deportations
*doesn't look right*
"Yes we will now do deportations too!" (not racist btw)

The migrants will continue until morale improves.

Nobody is being deported, or even stopped from coming in. They've already played their hand when they said they want to allow immigrants, legal and otherwise, to have the ability to vote.
The migrants will continue until morale improves.
The migrants will continue to appease the pakis in power. Morale can improve, it doesn't matter. The flow won't stop without Austrian Painter levels of interference.
