Ive been reading about our strategic bomber fleet and I found somthing sobering, without googling can anyone tell me how many Strategic bombers we are feilding right now? counting b-52s (yes those are still our main bomber) b-1s b-2s and all 3 of the b21s
its less than 200, closer to 150 actually if they actually tried to get half those b-1s in the air.
70 odd b-52s
45 b-1s
19 b-2s (originally 21 but 2 crashed/fire broke out)
3 b-21s with 97 more planned but inside intel says we will be lucky to get 5, 10 would be a miracle, the price per unit keeps ballooning and unofical sources says in testing the best radars still pick it up well before it opens its bomb bay, when it does that it glows like a roman candle, final estimate is that best case scenario it has a less than 50% chance of making it into a contested air zone with a near peer and approaching 0 making it back to base after munition drop, country as large as russia or china would have bases not hit by the bomber and scramble jets to its few vectors of return witch they would calculate very quickly
Its the same reason the b-2 got canceled, ballooning per unit costs, not actually that stealthy and they can only be reliably used on an enemy without an air force. USAF dosent want to admit this, strategic bomber funding is like a solid 1/3rd of their whole budjet and they dont want to admit to themselves or the American people or congress that drones seem to be completely superior to all conventional air force and a cruise missile does the job a fighter jet did in the 80s for infinity cheaper. Its rapidly approaching a time where their only reliable combat role is going to be transport unless some new wild technlogy comes along.
