I don't see why they'd have to inherit the union if they don't want the employees. What is the union going to do, go on strike? Valnet doesn't want them.

Valnet also bought NYmag.com (and laid some people off there as well) so it's likely Vox Media(who bought NY magazine in 2019) just wanted to dump polygon and made taking it part of the deal.

I have a feeling the Giant Bomb shuttering is more than just “strategic brand and creation realignment”. There is something that has been going on with Giant Bomb that I can’t quite articulate, but I’m pretty sure there is concern over their content that goes beyond “PG-13”. They went and completely stopped the site, and I highly doubt it was just because of an off color joke about Emma Frosts tits in Marvel Rivals. They saw something or have something on someone and immediately ceased operations and shit canned Jeff Grubb, after he nervously did an emergency podcast about how he “doesn’t know what’s going on”. Hey now to be fair these gaming journos specialize in a particular thing as well! Problem is there isn't a very big audience for "gamers bad" and hardcore leftism and its relation to gaming.

But yeah joking aside if we're looking at it from all angles the rise of independent reviewers on youtube and the like really helped kill this industry too. Far better in-depth analysis and reviews covering pretty much any niche you could imagine. The old media just never adapted. It's 2025 and they're still writing 1500 word reviews that barely gloss the surface of a game. Most "professional" reviews read more like a preview of a game, it's mostly fluff.

Even if no political sperging was involved there isn't much of an audience for that type of content anymore. It is actually a shame because we live in a world where everyone has a phone in their pocket and time to kill. When I find myself in those situations I actually wish there was good gaming content I could read since I am not going to be one of those assholes who just loudly plays a youtube video while I am in a waiting room or wherever.

I think a lot about the failed G4 revival because they just couldn't stop alienating their audience. It would have never been as popular as before and trying to do a lot of longform podcast content was a mistake, but if Adam could have just kept his coke rage in check and they found some conventionally attractive (but an actual gamer) like Morgan Webb to co-host X-Play with him it would have been a start. But I already knew that it was doomed to fail when they did that reunion the year prior, they announced a bunch of new hosts and one of them was a nigger who cried that "the old G4 didn't have enough people who look like me".
