UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Has anyone else noticed a huge downplaying of these elections?

Not even top-page news on BBC. Not even near trending or anything like that.

Think we might be witnessing the oldest political party in the world's last dying breaths. There's some absolutely blood-thirsty scenes on Sky News right now between some Tory and Labour wets,

Even if one does not like Reform and its policies (or lack thereof...), one should see this as a whitepill regardless.

This is the British public seeking change and rejecting progressivism once again, it's important to note how Reform is perceived by those less "online" than us, it's portrayed as the "ebil far right party that will deport all the brown people" by various left-wing sources and yet it's still making waves.

Let's not mince words and get entirely optimistic though, Reform will not do anything, they'll be the Tories 2.0, but a proper right-wing party could potentially capitalise on all of this in the future. Although the worst case scenario is the British people becoming further dejected by yet another betrayal and giving up on voting altogether, it will be likely be a very bitter betrayal.

We might not be doing so well gentlemen, but let's count our blessings, we're most certainly doing better than our dominions both in this regard and in demography. It's a step in the right direction and I have faith that we will win this fight.

Britain lives and marches on.

FOUR VOTES!

Full Runcorn recount going ahead, apparently four votes split Labour and Reform. Insane result and the fact it's so close is fucking wild.

REFORM HAS WON THE RUNCORN BY-ELECTION BY FOUR VOTES.

Labour demanding a full recount (again!)
I believe it's actually the same recount that's ongoing right now, but still a very close result regardless! A much better showing from Reform than expected!

If it's really four votes, then it's the tightest ever victory in a by-election and depending on the final results, we'll see what the swing is. Most of the results so far seem to be 35% swing to Reform in the usual Tory places like the East Midlands and Lincolnshire areas. Jenkyns won the Lincolnshire mayor with some boroughs reporting 55% for Reform.

Even in ex-Labour places, the swing is at least 30% which is fucking insane. One thing I did underestimate was just how many Labour votes Reform are nicking, they're stealing more voters from Labour than the Tories.

Who knew old Blighty could create as much electoral entertainment as the Americans. Germany and France really ought to step their game up.
We know when to slip in a nice little treat.

Also, Germany and France has its own fun shit going on. That new coalition in Germany almost collapsed before it even started. Huh, turns out that ignoring 30% of the people who vote has consequences. Funny that.

Reform has lost the Doncaster mayoralty by 700 votes. The Labour lady has been the mayor since 2013 but that is SO TIGHT.

Honestly? Was thinking Doncaster would have been an easy win. The Tories did way better there than expected.

30% swing still, which is incredible. 21% swing from Labour to Reform.

Labour demanding a full recount (again!)
I get that it's fun to say "I demand a recount" as someone that has lost but when the council who organised the original count is run by your own party it's just embarrassing and as it means none of the staff counting can leave the building for another 10hrs+ you know it's going to produce a lasting hostility in the area too.
