Mass Effect Andromeda: Shitstorm Edition - RIP Biowear

You know what this reminds me of? Like, a lot?

Command and Conquer 4.

A few Kiwis who've been paying attention may have noticed I said EA was cyclical with its behavior. I meant this. EA will go through cycles where it becomes absolutely fucking amazing for a bit, does everything right, seemingly has the golden touch with its teams and staff, and then suddenly, a change in management happens and everything fucks up.

C&C went into a bit of a dry spell for a bit after Westwood got bought out. Generals got released, and while a fantastic game, it never was quite as big as Tiberian Sun or Red Alert 2. At some point, during one of EA's upward swings, it did something.... Well, fucking awesome. It went out of its way to get pretty much every member of Westwood's old team together and threw a truckload of money at them making arguably the best C&C game to date. The result was Tiberium Wars, which was not only a fucking great game, but was so successful that it actually almost cracked into being a legit e-sports title. Oldschool fans and newcomers alike raved about it, because it would run fine on shitty computers but looked smooth as buttered glass if you had a high-end rig. It got a fantastic, love-letter-to-the-fans expansion in Kane's Wrath, and a good time was had by all. Stuff started to get set up for Red Alert 3, hopes were high, and it looked like things were on the rebound.

Then the Electronic Arts as usual happened. Management got rotated out, the guys who knew what they were doing got axed, the new management with no understanding of video games slashed budgets, RA3 had to make do with less cash, and pressured the team to get C&C 4 out ASAP. With no budget and most of the team fucking off to greener pastures because of increasing management interference and incompetence, management insisted that the game emulate a popular E-Sports RTS of the time, which was THQ's Dawn of War II.

In the end, the result was a terrible game with everything slashed and burned to meet a deadline, always online (because fuck you), created mostly by third-stringers with next to no budget. To quote a friend of mine: "I'm not going to say it's a terrible game, but I will say that despite pirating it, I feel ripped off." The franchise died, never to return.

There is a slight thing to note with C&C 3 and Kaine's Wrath though.

The writing was far and away on the wall. It wasn't so much as a "love letter" but a goodbye letter.

Quite frankly, without Kucan out there helping with the storyline (he basically created C&C as we know it) the games were pretty doomed.

4 was the epitome of it because they got rid of Kaine at the fucking end.

I'd say EA's problem is they want everything to perform the same as their sports gaming arm, which is frankly utterly impossible. Mostly because the sports arm keeps their shareholders happy. This is why insanity happens for things like C&C 4, Simcity, and the Deadspace Franchises. They placed high unit sales on them (in DS3's case it was some five million to save the series, it sold just 605,000) and then kill them when they're done.

Mind, this is because I don't think EA's particularly profitable any more, the rapid expansion in the mid 2000s may have holed their financial waterline more significantly than anyone around has realised. The significant fuckups of failing to revive Medal of Honor and the slow death of DICE with the DLC-by-a-thousand-bucks, the effective killing of Titanfall 2 by marketing indifference, and now the motherlode of Mass Effect Andromeda, possibly their flagship storytelling arm circling the drain.

Things look rotten, in the Kingdom of EA.

My prediction is we'll see them rummaging through all the IPs they own now and then desperately throwing things at a wall to see what sticks over the next few years, which will result in more fuck up because they will rush it.

After that we'll probably see a slow withdrawal from the field, taking lots of classic IPs with them to sit in their vault Smaug-like, never to be seen again.

I have Revolution 60 for that. Which impossibly has better fucking writing.
Yeah and its pretty great. I love how bad the writing can get.
Ever wonder why the fuck the Krogan joined the Initiative when the genophage still exists and most of their children turn out stillborn?
The Krogan mutated and became more resistant to the genophage...in stasis.
They also underwent gene therapy to resist the genophage...in stasis too.
It was established in ME2 that the genophage was modified to specifically stop mutations and treatment from happening, but I guess Andromeda writers couldn't be bothered to remember a basic plot point in Mordin's loyalty mission. Really good stuff.

I got this offa /v/ and did almost no fact checking of my own, so take it with a grain of salt, but here's your lead animator.

I think EA will ruin Dragon Age next. Keep in mind that it was a specific BW studio that made ME:A (Montreal was it? IIRC)
They'll probably be like "OH NOES, WE NEED MORE CASH, QUICK DO SHITTY RUSHED DA SEQUEL NOW FOR 5 BUX BUDGET) and THEN completely kill off what remains of BW.

BTW, something that hasn't been mentioned by anyone yet: MEA has been developed since late 2012.
well over 4 years of development and this is what we get lol.

They could've handwaved it by saying something exceptional like "Oh, the Krogan arc launched after the Genophage was cured & btw that was canon"

Still better than Watch Dogs 2

But in the past 4-5 years we haven't gotten a mere footage of the game, the first gameplay came out last year in the PS4 pro apresentation, some months ago.

The game actually existed? I think they scrapped the project and created one from scratch in 1 year and something.
