How is a person so smug about having spectacularly failed a charity event?

In a perfect world they would have structured the event to protect themselves. But that doesn't necessarily mean that they're insulated from any costs. People can still sue them under the theory that they're personally liable, and they'll have to spend money to defend themselves. The reason people with winning cards in their hands still settle lawsuits isn't because they're afraid of losing, it's because the cost of hiring lawyers to defend themselves is still onerous.

And that's all assuming they've perfectly managed their business dealings to insulate them from personal liability. Given how terribly they've run their business dealings in the past, that's a doubtful premise to me. If that promoter is really on the hook for a lot of money, Anisa and her husband will have to prove themselves in their legal filings.
