well mind you, they clearly can't predict where things are going but they can tell when people don't like something. Neither of them would be delusional enough to think this is going well, so the fact that he acts like it is is a solid giveaway that somebody has their hand up his ass.
The extension doesn't actually show the dislikes as they actually are, it uses a formula for anything in the last 3 and a half years.
Now, the assumption is that the real dislike ratio must be lower because RYD users are more likely to press the dislike button. But if the ratio was so much better than it appears, then why isn't IdBS just showing his dislike count? Maybe it's because it's still embarrassing, but I think that he would count even 2:1 likes to dislikes as a win.
But what if it's actually even worse? Brigading would be even easier because your dislikes
and likes are both magnified by the ratio of voters who have the extension.
For example, if a video has 900 likes, 100 dislikes, and 10% of the voters have the RYD extension and vote in a representative way, 90 likes and 10 dislikes. The video has a 90:10 (10%) like to dislike ratio, and the RYD calculates that it has (10/90) * 900 = 100 dislikes (and knows that it has 900 likes) therefore returning the correct number of dislikes. If I bring in 10 friends to try to bring the ratio down, I barely change the actual ratio... now it's 90:11 (10.89%). But if we all have the RYD extension then it will display (20/90) * 900 = 200 dislikes, so the ratio is now 90:20 (18.18%).
Alternatively, if we were trying to raise the likes the number of dislikes shown would actually
go down if we all used the RYD extensions. (10/100) * 910 = 91... not only did we increase the likes, but we decreased the dislikes displayed. The actual ratio is 91:10 (9.90%), but the displayed ratio is 910:91 (10%).
From this example, it might appear that brigading in favor is significantly less effective, but that's just because the starting ratio was already 9:1. Let's consider a case where the ratio is 1:1
500 likes to 500 dislikes. 50 RYD likes and 50 RYD dislikes.
Dislike brigade would result in an actual ratio of 50:51 (49.50%), but 600 dislikes displayed and a 5:6 ratio (54.54%).
Like brigade would result in an actual ratio of 51:50 (50.50%), but 425 dislikes displayed and a 102:85 ratio (45.45%).
As you can see, it's equally effective in either direction and the effectiveness of the brigade is effectively multiplied by 10 in all these examples, the ratio of voters who have the RYD extension.
IdBS is open to brigading, Hasan clearly did it in the Content Cop and he explicitly called for people to like the Content Deputy video in order to improve the ratio. I don't know the ratio of people who have the extension, but it's got ~3 million downloads, so I think that 0.1% is a reasonable assumption, which would mean the power of a brigade is multiplied 1000x, which would translate to 275 RYD likes and 350 RYD dislikes. If IdBS could get 100 of his fans (or Ethan's haters) to vote up the video with the extension, that would lower the number likes all the way down to 113, they would have had a negligible effect on the actual number of likes, but would obliterate 41,000 dislikes. Even a tiny brigade of 10 people would be able to remove over 10,000 dislikes.
