It's either fail or they tend to realize their community is so small and xenophobic that if they appealed to "cis" people it would be more of a net positive. We might hear about these extreme LGBTQ friendly games for a few days then unless you go to threads like this you will never hear them again even after the small grace period. There's only a few games that last but what you notice is that they end up being co-opted (usually because the devs start pandering like Ultrakill) and made into "trans core" or whatever it is called.

Honestly this community hasn't learned that being hyper LGBTQ+UltraArcadeEdition creates a finite product that loses steam quickly.

I've had the opportunity to pick brains a few times and a bunch of them literally have so little IRL interaction they don't realize that in normie socialization people very rarely talk about BDSM and dog dicks, especially when it might reflect on their business. In fairness a bunch of them live in rich west coast cities where it is a legitimate topic of discussion as to whether we should let people jack off on the bus or not

Same reason pixelart was the big indie thing for so long, it's easier to make PS1 style look passably good than any other 3D style. People cite nostalgia all the time but that's the real reason.

It's the same as pixel art in that 90% of games look like low effort trash but some look really good. There are always cool techniques in older tech. Personally I'm waiting for someone to do high-res photographic textures on low(er) poly models like some games in the early 2000s did. I think that's got a very high ceiling for looking cool.

What is interesting about this is that even on the internet in most spaces people don't wanna see it but because of the way things are (mostly social media and how websites are trying to beome more social media adjacent) you will be subjected to random LGBTQ types and furries happily talking about their fetish fuel because they either lack friends irl or have friends that don't wanna hear that nonsense assuming it isn't the former. Funnily enough I saw someone had a mod for the Mario 64 decomp that re-adds all of the textures from the game in their original quality. It's uncanny as hell seeing textures this high-res and what they originally were before being downscaled, can't say it totally fits 1-to-1 like their downscaled counterparts, but it's still pretty cool.

What happened is multiple things specifically the death of subculture and the need to push for all inclusive environments. "Boomer" style talk incoming but back then if you wanted to talk about how much you love Lola Bunny or some shit there were forums, websites, threats and etc for that. It was contained in its own place because people that liked that thing could carve out their own community. Of course as we know the rise in social media and websites that lump everyone in once place effectively killed this. Respectful nerds like us that knew how to actually have a conversation that isn't about nerdy stuff get lumepd with the rejects and degens whose whole personality is the thing(s) they like and that created a stigma.

Today's SJWs were the Tumblr types and were the aforementioned rejects and degens who irl have no social skills at all so they went on the internet. Problem is they lose their spaces due to either their own actions or just in general their spaces dying and splintering off. TL;DR We have to put up with their nonsense because there isn't places they can go to be contained anymore. The need for social media created a new problem in these people that it is perfectly ok to talk about their degen stuff while trying really hard to act "normal".
