US Portland, Oregon Megathread - Tales from The Rose City

Didn't see much of a thread regarding all the fine antics of Portland and the people who live there, so I thought to make one.

Lesbian bar shuts down one week after opening because they weren't woke enough

Doc Marie’s is a lesbian bar that opened on July 1st of this year with the hope of bringing more inclusivity to the city of Portland. But just one week after their grand opening they were forced to shut down because of complaints that the bar was not a “safe space.” Similar to the story I wrote a few weeks ago about the queer-owned cafe in Philadelphia that was shut down by employees for not being woke enough, Doc Marie’s was cannibalized by the woke mob.

The crowd on opening day was huge. One woman said that the line for entry on opening night was “wrapped around the block” with “literally 200 lesbians” waiting to get in.

But the excitement about a new progressive hangout dissipated quickly. Within days, Doc Marie’s found itself on the receiving end of accusations of not being inclusive enough for trans people and people of color. Despite mask mandates being lifted in Portland, patrons accused the bar of not implementing enough COVID safety measures. Patrons also claimed that Doc Marie’s had “culturally appropriative art” on the walls.
One TikToker, who says she attended the grand opening, breaks down the accusations against the bar:

Employees of Doc Marie’s created an Instagram page to echo these concerns. They claimed that the owners weren’t proactive enough in creating a safe space and accused the owners of racism. The employees also demanded that the bar host “free opportunities for education” for the community.

Eventually, the employees demanded the owners relinquish ownership of the bar and hand the business to them. The owners were given a “24-hour deadline” to adhere to the ludicrous demands.

Just five days after opening, the bar announced on July 6th that they had to close temporarily in order to address the cries from the woke mob for a “safe and inclusive space.”

Surrendering to the woke mob doesn’t appear to be working out in Doc Marie’s favor, as the bar remains closed with no public plan to reopen.

Another day, another protest. I was raised with an appreciation for volunteerism and charity, so why don't these dumbfucks actually organize to do something constructive around the city?
It's an unexamined mindset, they're just mad about things and frustrated because they feel powerless to change it, so they're lashing out to try to effect some kind of change. If they actually tried to figure out what upset them and change that, they would probably try to organize something material in their local communities beyond the most performative "we raised funds for another drag queen trivia night at the pub!" announcements. Even those just serve as another occasion for them to gather, complain about politics and reinforce each others' opinions, and otherwise do nothing.
The point of protests is not to affect change. The point of protests is to protest. They are not interested in solutions, they want to be angry.

Portland woman attacked by dog while walking to work may lose her leg

A Portland woman who was attacked by a dog while walking to work last week is gearing up for a third surgery as doctors try to save her leg.

Javonnie Johnson was going about her daily routine on March 27, she parked her car here at the Taco Bell on 7th and Broadway and crossed the street to her job at a FedEx Office and that is when she said she was attacked.

“All of a sudden, to my right, this dog charges after me. Then he chomps down on my leg,” Javonnie said.

Javonnie said she walked by a homeless camp and that is where the dog that attacked her came from. Javonnie said she was attacked unprovoked and the dog would not let go, and no one tried to help her.

“This whole time this dog is chomping on my leg and no one is coming to help me and I’m just so devastated. No one called 911 no one has done anything at this point,” Javonnie said.

She had to call 911 herself and while she waited for the paramedics to arrive one thing was going through her head.

“I don’t want to lose my foot and as this dog is chomping down I feel my foot going numb and numb and numb,” Javonnie said.

She was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital. So far, has had two major surgeries in the last week. Including removing all the damaged tissues and moving an artery from her right leg to her left to improve circulation. Plus, she will undergo another surgery on Friday.

“They are going to take tissue and muscle from the back of her leg and bring it to the front,” Javonnie’s daughter, Lashunda Johnson said.

Lashunda rushed down to Portland from Seattle when she heard her mom was attacked. After she made sure her mom was where she needed to be, Lashunda wanted to know where the dog was.

“I’m told by Multnomah County Animal Services the dog is in custody and I’m told there is a 10-day holding period for the dog to check for rabies and stuff like that,” Lashunda said. “I really hope and pray the dog gets euthanized. It’s really surreal.”

And Javonnie hopes the dog owner is held accountable.

“I am ashamed of our city and I’m ashamed of our government. I would like to see if you have a vicious dog they need to have a muzzle on it or you shouldn’t have a dog. Maybe they should ban pit bulls.” Javonnie said. “Accountability, in my opinion, still needs to be had. I don’t feel a homeless person gets a pass. To me they are bad pet owners. Dogs shouldn’t be living in cars, or on the street, why do you have pets if you are on the streets?”

Portland police said so far no arrests have been made.

As for Javonnie’s leg, she is not sure if she is going to lose it or not, but she is calling on the city to crack down on irresponsible dog owners, specifically homeless dog owners so this does not happen to anyone else.

Javonnie’s daughter created a fundraiser to help cover her medical expenses.

I wonder what breed the dog is.
It says in the article:
“I am ashamed of our city and I’m ashamed of our government. I would like to see if you have a vicious dog they need to have a muzzle on it or you shouldn’t have a dog. I just literally spent hours trying to organize my neighbors to go to a critical town meeting and they can't be bothered

they were all out at that gay protest this weekend

I don't think there's an Oregon containment thread, so I'm posting this here.

Coos Bay was a mistake. It's funny as it used to be based on timber and once that went away it went to hell. It still voted for Trump as a whole but it's obviously infected.

Welp, apparently the one TTRPG store I really liked doesn't want me there anymore.

Due to hate speech on servers of other stores (might be a valid complaint, might not, they didn't elaborate further), disruptive behavior, inappropriate comments (I have a ribald sense of humor but no one actually said it was a problem), causing disruption by being late (I am sorry if it discombobulated things but I did at least try to keep people posted and also my work schedule makes things complicated, so I dunno what he expected), butting in after every comment (uhh, sorry??)...Yeah.

This all sorta came out of the blue. I'm not even angry, just sad and confused because I for one enjoyed their company and legitimately did not know anyone there had a serious problem with me.

Man, that sucks to hear.

Yeah, it's really disappointing. And now that I recall, the guy said he'd keep me posted as to whether last week's game was on (depending on attendance), but then didn't tell me and I only found out through the store's Discord server from another person at the umpteenth hour.

And then the guy has the gall to tell me my attendance isn't adequate.

It's a real shame. I genuinely liked him but we clearly were not on the same wavelength.

The intersection of PDX brainrot and the nerd social dynamics of game stores / TTRPGs / anything adjacent makes for a real bizarre mix. People have this hard-headed approach to anything vaguely political, including "oh shame [person] is shitty wow did you hear?" about any random online drama, and if you do anything less than nod and go "wow no way" it's interpreted as not sufficiently moral, don't you know you have to be a good ally, are you excusing [anything]phobia??? But, at the same time, because we're talking about gamers and nerds here, they tend to handle social things in very conflict avoidant ways when they don't have a social script to follow.

If attendance were the problem they'd have brought it up, someone sufficiently annoying or """important""" decided you were annoying, and it's easier to just ice you out than actually have a discussion about it. It's the weird, weaselly impulse to just make the problem go away rather than work interpersonal things out, because that's hard. Ironically from the types of people who preach ~empathy~ the most.

So they have no spine/social skills, got it.

Christ, way to live down to unflattering stereotypes, nerds.

Amazing how a hobby that requires communication, empathy and social problem solving skills attracts people with none of those abilities.

It's been nice to visit there the couple times I've been through. They have the best burger/shake place I've ever been to (Yeong's), which is worth going out of your way to visit if you're going to even remotely be in the area. OK, technically it's in North Bend, but the two are functionally the same town.

I get the feeling it was the guys at Dark Future that ratted me out. I kinda got annoyed at them for jerking each other off on their Discord and on Bluesky about how hard it is being a queer (when they don't do anything to advance themselves and just be angry and sulking on social media all day).

It was really jarring because the Dark Future guy was likable enough in person at his store but apparently guests are obligated to sit through their cry sessions on their social media.

Between this and the Fallout: The Frontier fiasco I can't for the life of me fathom how Portland nerds are this socially stunted. Where do people find the time for all this woke crusading?
