Oh sure, trams are nice- as long as the tram decides not to die while getting off the tram loop and block the entire road (happened to trams in my 120k hometown all the time). Or the tracks decide it's time for buckling (happens all the time in my current big city)

he talks like a tourist, he mentions discovering new shops while looking through the window in a tram, and riding the tram when he arrives to a new city. Most comuters have done the same route hundreds if not thousands of times, they don't give a shit, they want to get to their place of work/home.
Well that is what Jason is at the end of the day. A tourist. He isn't forced to take a tram every day if he doesn't want to. Most people that commute on a tram wish they had a car. They don't have to get squished, sit next to hobos, and they can carry more things to work as well as just drive around outside the city without a fucking bus.

it's funny because he mentions that trams need way less maintenance than buses. There aren't that many trams in my country but when i was younger i commuted by train and bus pretty often. Trains broke down way more than buses, i think the later only happened once or twice and it was relatively easy for the company to make another bus stop and take the passenger. Trains not working? it happens often.

Perhaps that soullessness problem in America is more than just a design problem in infrastructure. Perhaps it lies either within the commentors themselves for being snobbish contrarians that looks down on others for not valuing the things they worship as well as their politics, by being libtarded and therefore supportive of the principles of the Globo-Homo Corporate America project, undermine any attempts at genuine community-building with continued insistence of DEI, which prevents true connections to form as people naturally "exclude" others they do not like for whatever "reasonable" reason, which (unfortunately for Libtards) includes Religion, Ethnicity, and Sex.

I wonder what exactly did he mean by that. Surely this wasn't written by a rich privileged kid that tasted the freedom of bar crawls in a foreign country with fellow students for the first time ever and decided that this is exactly how every resident of some Big, Old and Euro city spends their days

you can tell this idiot has never lived next to a noisy place. Lack of sleep is ranked as the number 1 torture by a lot of people who have actually been tortured. It's not some minor nuisance. Also these hypocritical idiots always talk about how noisy cars are but a bar next to your apartment? that's ok. They would denounce companies who contaminate water just because it's economically convenient for them but sound pollution that it is extremely detrimental to peoples health is ok because shitty bars want to make some more money blasting music at 3 am on a Thursday.

Retards like Jason unironically say "cities aren't loud, cars are." As if cars were the only source of noise in a city.

It would be far more accurate to say cities aren't loud, niggers are.

aside from bikes and cars that have been modified to make a lot of noise, car noise is not even that annoying, i rarely hear people complaining about it, they mostly complain about loud music or barking dogs.

As for the groups that are loud i would put latinos as by far the loudest group, even blacks complain about them, as a latinks who doesn't like loud muisc, my life is suffering.

It's not even cars that are loud and annoying. It's the city utility vehicles. Nothing like the trash trucks or street sweepers waking you up at 5 or 6 am, every day.

The noise people complain about the most is sharp loud sounds out of the quiet. Bars/clubs are generally constantly the same volume so you can easily get used to it and ignore it.

I lived for years over a club, it barely compares to having freight trains run past constantly.

No. No. That would mean "I'm" broken, not just the world around me. Too much introspection required.

Though seriously, I think they are half right. American Urbanism is a reflection of or symptom of the problem. And the same thing exists Europe in the form of a more leftist/statist planning of these huge concrete jungles around the big cities that were to become real livable communities out of nowhere but became black holes of inactivity at best facilitating transportation elsewhere and at worst being filled with undesirables, unemployed and those stuck there due to lack of better options. Its all two different sides of the same coin, a few people planning and designing the lives of a few millions instead of those millions forming real emotional and financial connections with each other and thus developing towns and suburbs on the basis of these.

Now Saudi Arabia plans to have an entire planned city called the line. It's going to be hundreds of meters tall and sunlight wont even reach the bottom of it. I'm sure it's not going to develop into a dystopian future with literal troglodytes roaming the bottom in a few decades. But it will have a convenience store every 9 "blocks" and mass camera presence from an ultra autocratic government to keep you safe from the baddies. Trust us (tm).

No cars, I've not even seen bikes, an ultra fast train that has to stop every 1 minute so it's gonna take forever anyway and the only way to get out for a "trip" is basically by helicopter which very few will be able to afford except on a rare basis.

We might even see this in the future, May Allah Forgive Me.

it may depend on people's brains.
I have lived near rails, next to a place where people scream and put loud music sometimes ( a soccer pitch you can rent) , and also a public park with cultural events ( mostly just music) i found the later two way more annoying. The thing with trains is that you know where they are they are easy to avoid, they sometimes put bars after you moved there.

New York in the summer is a noisy place, especially if you don’t have money. The rich run off to the Hamptons or Maine. The bourgeoisie are safely shielded by the hum of their central air, their petite cousins by the roar of their window units. But for the broke—the have-littles and have-nots—summer means an open window, through which the clatter of the city becomes the soundtrack to life: motorcycles revving, buses braking, couples squabbling, children summoning one another out to play, and music. Ceaseless music.

The only time (unmodified) cars are loud is when they're moving at high speed and that's primarily due to road noise from the tires. This is only really an issue if you live near a highway/freeway/interstate.

In rural areas you typically build off of a highway because you have space to make your driveway longer to cut down on that noise, plus planted trees work as a very nice soundbreak.

If you live in a suburban area they typically have en9ugh space to either move your residential neighborhood off the highway a bit and/or build noisebreaks onto the highways themselves (that's why highways in suburbs have those tall walls around them).

In urban areas I really hope you like hearing that shit coming off the overpass at all hours, and if not then I hope the elevated rail lines are somehow magically less noises than a clickety clack train naturally is.

EDIT TO ADD: I think the reason why most of these people don't care about bar noise and street festivals and whatnot and specifically is due purely to the fact that they are rootless and itinerant people with no family or true friends, and alcoholics on top of that. They work shitty dead-end customer service jobs and drown themselves in alcohol regularly because that's their only definition of fun; drinking. Read their posts and realize that they just want to be 19 forever and they're the ones who are at the bar until oh dark every night getting blasted, so of course they aren't going to complain about the noise they're making.

- He says trams are cheaper than buses (his source is just one guy from Toronto). That seems hard to believe, considering how common buses are compared to trams. Even after installation, you still have to maintain the tracks, which isn’t cheap, he probably didn’t take that into account.
That's hard to say in general. The initial cost of building the tracks is very high. The cost of running a new bus line is just building the bus stops. Or just putting a bus stop sign in the road side. In cities, sometimes speed bumps and some narrow streets need to be redesigned, but then a bus line is often ran as a side effect, not the other way. Running a tram line on an existing street is more complicated, you need to redesign everything and find separate space for the tracks (at least 3 car lanes worth of street width), or run the tracks in the road, which defies the purpose of making a tram line.

The only upside of trams is that they are immune to traffic jams (if you set the traffic signalling right and dumbasses don't block the tracks at intersections with their cars). Then you get to cruise the city at average of 15 mph while other people are stuck in a traffic jam.
-Those extremely low-floor trams seem like they’d be a risk in cases of flooding, heavy rain or snow.
Not really a problem, if there is enough snow or flood to prevent a tram going through, then any other traffic is not possible either.

- He says trams are flexible (because they can sometimes become trains), but then claims they’re good because they’re fixed in place and that increases the land value, unlike bus routes, which can change. So which is it?
This is total youtube essayist bullshit. At least in Europe, many trams use the stephenson track gauge (1435mm), and use overhead wires for power, just like trains. That's where the similarities end. Trams run on lower voltage - usually 500-700V DC. Normal trains use much higher voltages like 3000V DC and sometimes even 15kV and 25kV AC. And even if you could adapt a tram to run at these voltages, the tram cars are not built for such high speeds to run on inter-city tracks and they do not have any of the safety and signalling equipment that is necesary to do so. Trams run at most 30mph, and thats only if the tracks are well maintained. You will never be a train.

Has that person ever ridden a tram?

he gives examples of some tram in europe traveling quite far, to the next towns at 75 km/h but at that point it's stops being a tram and it's a train, for what you are saying whatever tram he was using was probably designed to be used as a train too.

My issue with what he's saying it's that he only mentions the maintenance of the cars and not the rails, when comparing how much maintenance they both need. Rails aren't cheap. You also have to maintain the roads for the buses too but they aren't the only ones using them.

The ones with overhead power also need line maintenance.
