KARL JOBST IS IN $1.8 MILLION AUS

To be clear, LUS in this video seems to be claiming or implying Karl owes Billy $1.8M. He does not owe him that amount of money, but this seems to be how much money has been put into this case by Karl and his supporters when you combine the judgment with interest, his legal fees, Billy's lawyer fees, etc. if Karl is to be believed here.

Still a hefty chunk of change.
Even in American real money... absolute fucking rape. He has been shattered, heart level down to zero :heart-empty:

Others have said it probably better and more succinctly, but it needs to be said again that Karl being a retarded asshole does not make Billy a saint. There is very compelling evidence that Billy used MAME to emulate Donkey Kong high scores, based on behavior of how the game loads/renders that only happen when its emulated, and never on original hardware. And while Billy wasn't responsible for Apollo's death, he certainly expressed glee or at least happiness about it, which is asshole behavior on Billy's part.

Now if you want to get in the nitty gritty of whether or not that's proof Billy cheated, it isn't by itself, but Twin Galaxies separated official and MAME scores for a reason - it's really difficult to tell if someone has done something subtle, invisible to the naked eye, to advantage their score in MAME. Beyond video/photo editing and save states, you could modify the game to act in a more predictable way to your advantage. Billy claimed scores were on original hardware when they weren't. Beyond MAME vs OG hardware for running the game, Billy is accused of getting high scores that used a modified 8 way joystick (that would be easier to make certain movements more quickly versus the four way joystick of original arcade hardware). Billy could have claimed the high scores under the emulated leaderboard if he was honest about it, but it lacks the same cachet and prestige since it's much more easily manipulated.

The most fascinating thing about this entire thing is how badly Jobst gaslit the internet on the nature of the lawsuit. Based on background understanding, not reading the case, hearing peripherally about the whole thing, I thought (prior to the verdict) that BIlly was really, really dumb, because even in Australia (where defamation/libel/slander cases are much easier for a plaintiff to prove versus the US) I didn't believe Billy had a shot since the proof of Billy cheating (or at a bare minimum, submitting MAME scores as original when they weren't) was extremely compelling.

I still think that Billy is an asshole, and I still believe he cheated, but I definitely do not consider him an idiot post verdict. On the contrary, Billy was upset by the cheating allegations but picked the battle that he thought he could win (if Billy believed he could have prevailed on both, he could have sued Jobst for defamation on the cheating too). That's smart, and his bants on it are fantastic.

This post earlier in the thread with Discord screenshots from Jobst is interesting, since it points out the time for an appeal has lapsed, that Notch didn't fully fund the lawsuit, etc... it changes my opinion on Jobst slightly. Jobst was retarded enough to go wage a war and accuse someone of causing the suicide of another person based on fucking reddit comments and then digging himself deeper and deeper when there were a million outs, but he seems to have finally reached the self awareness that he did fuck up and that trying to appeal would be a massive legal error that would just fuck him even more.

It doesn't erase the fact that Jobst misled his viewers grossly to the tune of $200K AUD in donations and that is real harm that he caused, but it does make me inclined to believe that Jobst was just extremely extremely extremely stupid rather than actively trying to grift. Also, partial funding from Notch on the lawsuit (if true; the Discord screenshots say Jobst is going to make that publicly known, and Notch could easily contradict him at that point, so I find that credible) means that Jobst wasn't trying to do some sort of overfunding scheme a la The Producers and it failed, else just take Notch for the whole ride if he was willing and also bilk your fans via GoFundMe for extra money.

Jobst got his heel turn and after years of Ls in the terms of public opinion Billy got a victory so unabashedly in his favor that even people that hate him can't argue that Jobst deserved to win, instead retreating to arguments of moral superiority that Billy cheated ergo he deserves to lose every lawsuit ever regardless of merit.

Viva Billy.

This mindset that speedrunning is a secret club you can be banned out of is stupid. I don't care if you're Adolf Hitler if Adolf by chance happened to jump taller than anyone in recorded history than you kind of just have to accept that no matter how awkward it is.
First Billy isn't a speedrunner, but second, if the definition of the record is highest score on the original equipment and you didn't use the original equipment, you didn't get the highest score on the original equipment.

In this case, I'm not at all convinced that the use of MAME helped at all, but it didn't fit the definition of the record. This makes it technically cheating, but far less serious a form than we were led to believe, and more or less a nothingburger. Those particular scores deserve their asterisks, but it doesn't erase his actually better records that were entirely legitimate.

Karl Jobst's Discord Message History Leak

This is so stupid it had to be done by someone who is either purposefully obtuse or so fucking stupid that they view the view count on YouTube as a form of high score. I think that it's a combination of the two given how Jobst reacted.
Okay. Let me wear my Karl Jobst hat for a bit, to give him the maximum benefit of the doubt:
  • As psuedo-Jobst, I believe that Billy cheated on high scores.
  • As pseudo-Jobst, I also believe that Billy was responsible for the death of Apollo legend based on Reddit comments. It's really stupid, but I'm giving Jobst maximum benefit of the doubt that he believed the statement was true at the time he made this statement.
  • Billy sends his legal demand letter saying hey, I consider this accusation that I'm (Billy) responsible for Apollo's suicide by you (Jobst) is defamatory, so I know I might be sued.
Any human being who watches YouTube knows that subject matter, headlines, and thumbnails all matter. They also know that viewers do not pay equal attention to times of the video. I am likely to skip the introduction and teaser and sponsor sections. When you start doing your play-out and the main subject matter of the video is over, the overwhelming majority of your viewers are going to tune out. Move to the next video, close the tab, whatever.

You cannot tell me that a person who has the intelligence to make many videos that get millions of views on YouTube is oblivious to these facts, and that burying the retraction at the end of a nearly 30 minute video on a video that was not about Billy was a way to bury it while smugly claiming "well I maximized its reach in views!", and that he either chose not to consult legal counsel when presented with the demand letter threatening to sue by Billy, or that said legal counsel gave him advice that he chose to ignore.

The alternative would be to believe that Jobst received counsel so ineffective it would have been potential appeal grounds (Jobst didn't appeal and says its too late) or that Jobst legitimately convinced himself that he was more of an expert than his lawyers and that the view count argument held water in some way (which would require me to believe that Jobst is so stupid he can't tie his own shoes.)

I cannot believe Jobst was so stupid as to legitimately believe the view count argument for how he placed the retraction. I think he thought himself the smartest guy in the room and that the argument that Billy cheated was so bad that it was somehow worse/negated his defamatory statement about Billy being responsible for Apollo's suicide that adding the "btw it got more views this way" was an unnecessary and irrelevant accouterment (like coconut shavings as an ice cream topping).

If this is really happening then there is a real chance the house purchase was financed via a loan and he had to sell because he had to pay for his lawyers.

Really makes you wonder what expenses that moron pissed away his steady income on.

[EDIT] Sadly Australia is such a cuck nation that they want 15$ for a bankruptcy register search. So I can't even check if Karl filed for it. Fucking Kangaroos.

Maybe crowdfund with some kiwis? How worth is it?
Not at all, Karl will surely tell us the truth soon. Maybe it would be worth it to get the public filings on assets etc. at a later point if it turns out to be real.
But paying for a search when it is not even clear if there is anything to find, not my idea of money well-spent.

Sorry Karl there's no escaping paying the King, nor child support when your wife leaves you.
I wonder if Karl is might be doing it to protect himself from Billy enforcing the collection and get a payment plan.

Yeah, the film is already known not to completely reflect reality. They cut out several instances of Billy being a great guy only to further portray him as a villain, like him cordially meeting Steve Wieby at the end of the video. Even then, the portion you're raising this point towards, the suspicious timing of the VHS tape being delivered, doesn't materially impact the issue of whether the text of the movie depicts Billy Mitchell as being allowed to circumvent conventional verification methods to usurp Steve Wieby's short-lived high score.
