I understand wanting to shit on Karl. He really does deserve it for his deception and allegations. That doesn't mean that Billy didn't cheat. What you're saying here is just silly. Billy himself doesn't even claim this, because that would be an admission that he played on MAME in the first place.

He played on MAME. The tapes he submitted showed visual bugs that only happen on MAME. He was well aware that playing on MAME is not allowed in the main category because it makes it possible to cheat undetectably. Billy doesn't deny that the tapes show MAME gameplay, nor does he claim that he mistakenly submitted them as the wrong category. He insists that there has been either a mix-up with the tapes, a conspiracy, or as his expert witness suggests, a once-in-a-quadrillion-years series of glitches involving his video capture device, Donkey Kong component aging and/or VHS artifacting.

Karl is an idiot, and he deserved to lose, but that doesn't mean everything Billy ever did is now magically right.

Do remember that any "cheated" score has been undeniably performed legitimately both before and after those which are held in contention.

Karl Jobst has always had more confirmed and proven instances of cheating in competitions than Billy Mitchell, including completely fabricated and forged times submitted in an attempt to steal away prizes from others.

Billy used hardware that wasn't considered original for one of his runs not including the MAME runs. He used a joystick that included extra motion and was not to original hardware specifications.

Billy also is litigious. He has gone after numerous people, including Cartoon Network and others.

Just because Karl screwed over his audience and let his arrogance be his downfall doesn't make Billy a saint.

That's how real world records work. If I pick up a book of Guinness World Records to find out who the tallest guy ever is than I expect them to actually tell me who the tallest guy ever is and not go "well this guy was technically taller but he doesn't count because he said something offensive about black people on twitter once so we're gonna pretend he doesn't exist".

For what its worth, a niche community centered around one game with 10-30 involved people in one Discord sounds like bliss compared to the Discord-only type slop we deal with now. Same way you can play Street Fighter 6 yet only deal with those who also share your main, giving you a unique view on the rest of the game.

I think the concept of speedrunning itself is interesting, however I am saying this with the expectation that, keeping with the Goldeneye example, you actually play the fucking game. You can see what the player is doing, sniping enemies as they run by, throwing the floppy disk across the room just right so it hits the computer and counts as finishing the mission, etc.

Running around staring at the fucking floor while periodically hearing that weird wheezing damage sound effect every time the runner gets a speed boost from getting shot in the ass just right is retard shit. Even though there is, objectively, talent involved here, it's not fun to watch in the slightest. There's nothing to see. It's not exciting. As soon as the "skill level" of a speedrun goes from "legitimately playing the game in a fast-paced impressive way" to "jumping at the wall just right so you clip into it and skip straight to the fuckin end", it's no longer fun to me. At that point you're not playing the game.

That's how I feel too. I admit some really game shattering ones like getting to the credits screen in like, two minutes into Ocarina of Time through some bullshittery is fun to watch like...once. But the kind of think you described where you just stare at the floor and stuff is boring as hell to watch. When they really crack open the game and play it, I find speedruns generally enjoyable.

When ever you hire someone to monitor these kind of things you'll invariably get them to justify their job when there's nothing to do. I'd like to shit on speedrunners in general but sadly this is a much more common problem in society than that. Corporate messing up a good thing is getting so common today that the only reason so many of these things survive is economies of scale and the lack of a mainstreet/algorithm to push new competitors forward that much.

The one that I member. Not even cringe, actually good comedy that builds up slowly.
