If Ian and Anisa still follow this conception of empathy, I'm not surprised they've been making such asses out of themselves.

She basically has no actual idea what empathy is. I'm sure if you mentioned the concepts of "affective empathy" and "cognitive empathy" she'd have no idea what the hell you're saying. It basically amounts to "affective empathy = I feel what you feel" and "cognitive empathy = I understand what you feel and why you feel it." She speaks about it like it's some kind of magical force that can't be understood, like the ability to see ghosts or read minds. But it's so simple a child could understand it.

While its true that without the ability to literally read minds you can't tell how much affective empathy someone has, you can make an educated guess based on how they act and what they say, and understanding cognitive empathy is as simple as asking someone "how do you think they feel? Why do you think they feel it?"

There's more layers and nuance to it, but only to fill in gaps. Once you understand that core concept you at least have a general understanding of empathy.

Based on Ian's actions and behaviors, how well do you think he's demonstrated both cognitive and affective empathy? And do you think he and Anisa have it confused with sympathy?

Well then his empathy must be extremely low. When he was streaming WoW and lost his character, he compared it to a dog dieing.

His feelings for others must be low. I think maybe he was right about "discovering empathy" because his empathy jumping from 5% to 7% probably did seem like leaps and bounds.

Also I'd like to point out narcissists are capable of empathy towards animals better than humans. They provide unconditional love and pose no competition to the narcissist.
