We all expect people to be normal. But a "normal" person is not the same thing as an "average" or a "common" person.
What we have in mind as a "normal" person is someone who can work within society in a way that doesn't damage or disrupt or freak out the rest of the group too badly.
But when we think about people, we're almost always thinking about the other people whom we know in society, the ones we see and interact with—not the fuck-ups and weirdos and reprobates—so we end up imagining that everyone else out there in society is just "normal." When we have a blank space for someone and have to guess or assume, we default to, "they must be kinda normal, right?"
We end up conflating "normal" and "common."

Being normal isn't that common.
There are a ton of people like Melton out there, each of them fucked up in a different way. Some of them are even good at hiding it!
Between social safety nets removing the punishments from being too weird, and the Internet connecting other weirdos and reinforcing their weirdness, even offering them ways to monetize it among their fellow weirdos, I'd imagine that normalcy is getting even less common.
