Saudis & Turks didn't need much American help to put their proxy in place over Syria (a process which took 13 years, starting long before Trump's first election), the main American proxy was the Kurds who are 1) disbanding their communist party and 2) unable to stand up against the victors in that war anyway. Everyone involved in the SCW was a cunt and a rentboy for outside foreign powers, including Assad himself (in his case, he was a proxy for both Russia and Iran, who are also most certainly 'foreign hostile governments seeking to dethrone American global power'), engaging in the most basic diplomacy with the cunt that came out on top and seeing where that goes can't hurt any more than maintaining sanctions which were supposed to target one of the guys he defeated or doing Israel's bidding and carving the place up for their benefit.
