Pat only does anything so that he can claim the label of the thing as an achievement. He's a sociopath who doesn't care about what he actually does, only what other people think that he does. His entire life revolves around bragging rights. Once you understand this, a lot of his behaviour and statements start to make sense. Pat's psychology is perverse, but it isn't complicated.
He hasn't made any real effort in writing for years, because he has "published sci-fi author" ticked off. He only wanted the label, he was never really interested in the writing itself. Sitting at the keyboard for hours editing your 15th draft doesn't grant you social status, so he doesn't bother. He did stand-up I think maybe twice at open mics and was terrible? "Stand-Up Comedian" achievement unlocked, no further effort required. Pat doesn't really want to be a Renaissance Man, he just wants other people to think he is. That desire for social status and admiration fills the void where his soul should be.
And, sadly, that applied to fatherhood, too. Having the label of "father" was the only thing that mattered. Actual parenting is difficult and tiring, so when the opportunity came up to not have to bother any more, he took it. He never loved his daughter, he has never loved anyone other than himself. He just wanted to boast about having a child, which he still does to this day.
