I have some eastern bloc machines, the most interesting one is an east german KC 85/2. There was a very narrow window after the eastern bloc collapsed where local flea markets in west germany had these showing up here and there, probably by people who wanted to start a new life in the "free world" bringing them over. A lot of the western IC stuff was reverse engineered in east germany, and there were also covert tech trade deals with west german companies like Siemens. An intersting artefact of this: Commodore kept redesigning the C64 in the 80s and there were tons of different board revisions and sometimes they needed bodges which were usually done in and around Braunschweig, sometimes as a work-from-home kind of deal for housewives; the passive components in these bodges are sometimes quite interestingly capacitors etc. made in east germany and I have a few of those boards here. One thing about Commodore's manufacturing: They threw nothing away.

There's still one electronics distributor in germany who sells surplus of east-germany made stuff, last time I checked ~4ish (?) years ago they still had GDR-made optocouplers. Until recently you also could find the odd tiny webshop in east germany here and there who somehow inexplicably sat on a considerable stock of soviet made Z80 and 8080 clones. They had their own numbering and naming scheme for everything including 74xx series logic and it's all very confusing.

The eastern bloc stuff has one very common thread compared to western world stuff: Horrible quality and poor reliabilty and temperature tolerances. The west was clearly ahead in that race. It's funny tho how in russia basically every other town had it's own flavor of western speccy rip-off.

I had the fortune to get hands-on with a Combloc Spectrum clone at a convention last year. Genuinely weird little machine. The top keyboard looked like they hacked up the molds of a cheap PC AT keyboard case, and the mech was...rough. Very oddly sharp/angled keys with obviously hand-applied legends. Bottom half was a steel case that had a much smaller footprint than the upper half, giving it a pedestal-like stance. What was most surprising was how bizarrely sturdily built it felt. The plastic, despite being horrifically dirty and discolored, felt tougher than any other 8-bit from the likes of Commodore or Sinclair, and it weighed an absolute ton. Completely different than the borderline barbaric looking Combloc Sinclair clones I've seen online. Very weird.
Edit: Also would like to mention, this one didn't look anything like a Sinclair clone. If I wasn't outright told it was, I never would've guessed.

Combloc Spectrum clone
Most of them have a vibe of being clobbered together of random things in some hobbyst workshop project. That said, the KC 85/2 is downright professional looking:

The horror only starts when you open the case:

The power supply that's also in the case is sadly not in the picture. I would have such sights to show you.

It's kinda ironic in a way because east germany was a lot like this also, seemed fine from the outside, cheap garbage from the inside.

The big IC in the lower left corner is the U880, which is the east german produced, unauthorized clone of the Z80, manufactured in the VEB ("Publicly Owned Enterprise", basically a nationalised company) Mikroelektronik "Karl Marx", (the name here acts as an honorary title these companies got for good efforts, the idea was IIRC to evoke competitive spirit, lacking all the normal market forces capitalism has to inspire them) Erfurt. It's mostly a straight up copy, even has the same illegal opcodes and bugs, there are some minor "behavioral" differences though.

Problem with the east german passives were that they were completely arse, like network resistors made of ceramic that'd fall apart on touch. (I broke one in my unit and had to bodge it) The ICs were also arse and had relatively limited temperature tolerances, a failure mode is the bonding wires ripping off the die. The east did not have the know how manufacturing these the west had. The CPU in my unit was completely dead, I replaced it with an U880 (don't remember the exact labeling) with externded temperature range, for military/industrial purposes. (Their "commercial" temperature range maxed out officially at +40C. )

These computers usually did not go into private hands, as supply was very limited. They usually were given to institutions, government organizations or -businesses. Wikipedia says there were ~45k units in that entire series (KC 85/2-85/4) and their source is some east german fanpage. I think that's very optimistic.

The Eastern bloc also had the only nearly perfect working clones of the IBM System/370 line ever produced as obviously they lived beyond the grasp of IBM's legions of lawyers. Weirdly enough, the hardware wasn't actually the hardest part for the Soviets but the software - I think they tried reverse-engineering OS/360 before eventually just giving up and hotpatching Russian language support into a bootleg copy someone smuggled in from West Germany.

There were also PDP clones, especially the PDP-11. I think they were ambling to clone the VAX but the CIA kept JUSTing them whenever they'd get a lead on importing one.

In the book "The Cuckoo's Egg" by Cliff Stoll talks about this. The KGB had a price list of things they wanted and IIRC a lot of stuff was VAX related, from user manuals all the way up to source code.

Since I'm not giving him a view... What was the context for this condescension? He's next to a condenser so it's fitting at least.
I was listening to public radio today so I could raise my blood pressure to normal levels and they're screeching about dew process in relation to illegal immigrant gang members getting an expedited ass kicking out of the US. So maybe he's eluding to that in a manner that's as ill fitting as his jacket?

Catching up to some ncommander streams and he's fully in seethe mode about orange man lol

EDIT: Okay I can't listen to this anymore. It's Ncommander constantly whining about the US, talking about how epic and cool Europe is, whining about his Cuban refugee dad, whining about Canada (???????)...

It's just literally everything I can't stand about impotent cosmopolitan American lefties dressed up with the charisma of a Debian maintainer.

Ncommander was seetheing so hard at chat I just couldn't continue. 10 hours of watching fucking cmd dot exe I swear he hates his audience now and wants the world to suffer and was going on some World is a Fuck rants.

He should just give up the computer and grow olives instead.

Talking about his move to Greece and how he needs to 'escape' from the US and I'm just like, "dude you're a white tech guy and not even gay. why are you acting like orange man is out to get you?"

I don't even mind a little politics here and there if he wants to get into it but he sounds so unhinged now and his schedule isn't consistent enough to keep what little audience he has. Also he just has a really bad habit of dropping interesting video ideas - he did a whole stream about the Amiga and getting a toolchain running on it and then just dropped it. His OS/2 series basically went nowhere. Now he's fucking around trying to get a Linux toolchain running in Windows XP and while it's moderately interesting, it's also not interesting enough to deal with tirades about orange man and learning greek every five minutes.

Would've loved more Amiga or NEXTSTEP streams but apparently he's given away all his retro gear. His last OS/2 stream was brutal - watching him type notes into a wiki for 4 hours. He also abandoned his oral history of Debian series after one episode.

There's a moment in an early stream where he starts playing Runescape while it's building, immediately loses all viewers and then gripes at chat for not being interested. He was making so many mistakes building the toolchain I don't think he was really paying attention to what he was doing anyway.

BTW Neozeed of VirtuallyFun did a better stream with the same theme. He built an early Linux kernel on the NT 3.1 beta, bootstrapping from the MS C toolchain:

I dunno if anyone else here watches Ionic1k but he's become a minor favorite of mine, especially since he tends to cover weird and/or enterprise things and not just consumer slop like a lot of the other big retrocomputing youtubers. Also I think he's black but I can't tell because he hides his face and does some grading stuff to de-emphasize his skintone.

Also I think he's black
1747541307225.webpIf his steam profile is anything to go by, his latest avatar looks like it matches his skin tone from one of his vids, he isnt black, just some mystery meat type guy. I didn't really care for his videos much, I watched maybe one or two of them before realizing hes kind of a faggot.
minor favorite of mine
Dunno if he's been mentioned in this thread but, Druaga1, at least before he went inactive was always a pleasure to watch.

Druaga's a certified retrocomputing hood classic.

I figured that was a possibility. Thanks for finding it so I can update my racism for when watching him.

All of his insanity can be explained by this picture from this video.

Bro is completely neurotic. Like there's something deeply wrong with him. Does he have OCD or something?

Null?
