Onosato is looking great... realistically, all he has to do for his remaining bouts is win more than he loses, and the YDC will have to convene and give him the rope.

The only slight concern I have is that he hasn't really faced anyone who's in form at the moment:
  1. Wakamotoharu - 3-5
  2. Takayasu - 2-6
  3. Abi - 4-4
  4. Oho - 3-5
  5. Tamawashi - 2-6
  6. Gonoyama - 1-7
  7. Takerufuji - 3-5
  8. Hiradoumi - 3-5
Admittedly, he can only fight against whoever he's matched up against, but I figure the real challenge begins now. He's going to have to face Kirishima, Kotozakura, Wakatakakage, and Hoshoryu in the final week. If he can get through a final seven matches including all four of those, he absolutely deserves to be Yokozuna. I could definitely see Hoshoryu catching up to him before they face each other, though.

This seems an incredibly retarded move. Sumo has been gaining a lot of traction in the last year or so, both domestically in Japan, and, more importantly, internationally, in large part due to Futagoyama beya's, and other heya's youtube channels. Stifling this, because rikishi eat a lot of food on camera (as we'd fucking expect for a sumo wrestler), is ridiculous.
I wonder if the popularity of the eating vlogs and day in the life vlogs have the JSA worried that more Western eyes will look at the sport and they'll have to deal with more criticism coming their way because of it? Sounds plausible, especially given that it'll get them more money in the long run from the popularity of the sport, so it seems silly to see them try to censor it otherwise.

I've fell behind on the May tournament recently but I just got through the first five days today. Something that didn't get noted was how stacked Oho's card was for the first few days of the tournament. Beats Kotozakura, beats Kirishima, beats Yokozuna Hoshoryu, then took an L to Onosato. Sad to see him going on a loss streak now after such a stacked start.

Speaking of Onosato, the guy looks like a brick wall. It's hard for me not to see him as the biggest threat in the competition so far.

There's no real logic behind the decision, especially given a lot of the JSA-sanctioned English-language content often focuses on chanko nabe, and the extreme amount of food rikishi eat, so to me, all I can conclude is that money is the underlying factor here... I'm assuming that the JSA probably wanted kickbacks from the various stables that run social media accounts, and perhaps the stablemasters have told them to fuck off.

even then they are shooting themselves in both feet, the amount of new fans to the sport brought in by futagoyamas channel alone should generate more money than a sub million subscriber youtube channel, and if the quality of the videos go down they would be getting less views and less new fans.. this is absolutely some oldhead JSA member being mad that the wrestlers are being seen more often showing emotion. if they had it their way the wrestlers wouldnt show emotion ever and they would behave as they do in the ring constantly. its fucking retarded whatever the reason

Stewardship decisions in Sumo sometimes make more sense when Sumo is viewed as first a religious practice, and a sport/competitive activity second. Or at least, then you can hand-wave the bizarre nip decision-making up to faith. Just file it mentally under "That would be an Ecumenical matter" 🤷‍♂️

MidnightSumo on Twitch is doing a lot of heavy lifting currently, too. 4-8k viewers most of the time during a basho, and re-runs in off-season that keep the interest high too. Only been doing it for about a year, and has gained quite a following in that time. He's just re-streaming Abema like other commentators, but is also a chill engaging commentator. The other ones are kinda grading and un-comfy.

Worth noting that these guys all stream Abema because NHK will shut down any restream or uploaded video of their coverage. I think more than anything, these guys are in a grace period, as Abema either doesn't care enough or isn't aware of the restreamers. At some point, Abema will no doubt crack down on those channels.

Yeah it'll go the way it goes in that regard, for now it's a nice time to be in. If the easy streams shut down I'll probably just tune out next basho. Breaking down the barrier to entry for non-japanese-speakers is the single smartest commercial move to make but as I said, viewing it through a commercial lens isn't always helpful.

NHK do have an English speaker there each day, don't they, seeing as they provide an English-language highlights show. I don't see why they don't just stream that on their subscription service. Probably requires a little too much activation energy than they're willing to put in.

They do! Although it's a bit spotty - misses a lot of stuff and kinda just subs the bits they feel like translating and no more, which is spotty at most.
But therein lies the problem - If you want to grow interest you have to be somewhere that can organically gather a following. That's the chanko youtube content and english commentated live shows. Kill them, adoption reduces. Ignore them, interest grows.
No idea if that makes anymore more money tho

NHK also doesn't post highlights on their YouTube channel over the weekend so you have to wait until Monday to get the weekend highlights, whereas most other highlight creators upload daily.

Yeah, it's really annoying. Presumably, they have one Japanese dude with above-basic-level English who edits them all together for NHK, and he doesn't do them over the weekend as it's his time off.

I could be wrong but I don't think they post anything on their YouTube channel over the weekend anyway which is odd. And yet they have the highlights videos ready to post Monday morning so they must be ready and they just never post outside weekdays. More reason to follow the fan channels I guess!

As someone who's worked in Japan, I think it'll either be as I mentioned in the above post, or something equally dumb, like there being one guy who's role (and only role) it is to upload videos to the NHK youtube channel who isn't around on the weekend.

I worked on a campus out there, and we couldn't send documents around the campus on days when the campus courier wasn't around, which was a nightmare, because, up until I left Japan in 2021, everything was handled by paper instead of by email/phone/messenger (I believe things are better nowadays, but not significantly). All the Japanese people I worked with just adhered to it, and would avoid those days, even though they could walk for 5 minutes to another department and drop it off themselves. I know it's not some secret, but Japanese people love autistically adhering to arbitrary systems.

Yeah, I like his channel, but haven't watched his vids in a little while. Thanks for reminding me he exists! I actually found myself missing the life I had in Japan not too long ago, but this guy, and there's another foreign worker who makes Youtube shorts about being a salaryman in Japan, who reminded me how shitty life is out there.

There's just an extremely pervasive cultural issue where everyone pretends to be busy to appear to be hard-working and diligent, but the reality is that everyone is just faking it, so nobody actually achieves anything, which is really why productivity is so low. They also create loads of random, invented, pointless jobs. For example, at the campus I worked on, you would have one gardener doing some kind of task, and three overseers watching the gardener. Or, if there's some construction going on on the road, they'll have 10+ people on a 10 metre stretch telling you to watch out, and be careful of the construction, and like 3 guys actually doing construction work, with two or three additional guys overseeing the construction workers.

My boss (who is a westerner) really bought into that side of the culture, and would start work at the lab I worked at before 8am, and would stay until 9 or 10pm six days per week, yet, he hadn't performed any experiments for over a decade by the time I joined the lab, and, as far as anyone could tell, he spent his day doing nothing, and generally only tended to publish whenever funding/lab review cycles came around every five years. I think in his head, he felt that if he pretended to be extremely busy, everyone else would work hard. He once told me I don't need to take weekends off, because I don't have any family in Japan, and if he can spend 14+ hours away from his wife and kid (who he seemingly hated) six days per week, I should be willing to do the same. I just walked out of the meeting.

Four days left. Onosato needs:
  • One win should be enough for Yokozuna promotion
  • Two wins to reach Hoshoryu's max possible score
  • Three wins to guarantee he wins the basho
I figure at this point, the only thing that would prevent him from getting promoted off the back of this basho is his disciplinary record. Only a year ago he was reprimanded by the JSA for drinking with underage rikishi.

There's always Nattosumo, the dude keeps rising from the ashes. Immense work ethic.
Where is he now? It looks like his original Discord got nuked. I gave up trying to stay up/wake up early for Makuuchi and started watching his Juryo/Makuuchi videos in the morning while I worked, and it was really nice.

Onosato wins day 13 against kotozakura, securing the tournament AND his promotion to the 75th yokozuna! can he get the 15-0? SATY TUNED

There's also a YouTube channel called sumo-video (with Japanese characters) that uploads individual matches pretty soon after they've happened. The added bonus too is that the thumbnails don't spoil anything and I can't read Japanese so no spoilers there either.

He's so fucking good. It'll be interesting to see how he fares as a Yokozuna given how dominant he looks in comparison to Hoshoryu currently.
