I don't think he was expressing joy in killing. He's just always been a weirdo in terms of his public conduct even before he advocated for and practiced assisted suicide. I always thought his odd personality was mostly due to him having grown up as a complete intellectual outsider (he was one of those kid geniuses who couldn't really connect with his peers), which may have made it difficult for him to reflect on how his behavior is perceived by normal people.My issue was more with the absolute joy killing someone brought out in him. Watch interviews with the guy after one of his killings, the guy's practically cackling with joy.
The other thing is that he always wanted to be a showman, like an actual stage performer.
