You cut that quote off, changing the context. Nabe claimed that Jobs and Woz were doing that, not Microsoft.
yeah i'm a fucking retard and completely misread that.

Back on topic, I haven't watched the video nor do I wish to, but is that an actual Altair or one of those modern reproduction cases for newer PC parts? If it's the former then god fucking forbid, if the latter then whatever, but the bigger question is why is Microsoft asking Linus of all people to do literally anything?

First thing I did was check and yep, ltt covered the MFG in a good light as why a 5070 was = 4090.

Wow it's insane how much performance you can get when you literally don't render native.
What's really insane is that people have been doing this with ini config file hacks for literally decades, so they could play more demanding games on extremely weak systems. Nvidia found a way to do the exact same thing but make it look a bit less shitty in an attempt to justify their ridiculous markup. The part where this falls apart is game devs being incentivized to get lazier and lazier as industry standards drop because of the industry leader's greed and foolishness.

I honestly wish what Steve mentioned in that video comes to pass - I hope Nvidia just decides to leave gaming and service AI, datacenter, and B2B entirely. They make so much more money from that market, it's unreal. Why the fuck are they wasting time and resources fucking up the gaming industry?

Basically I think it is volume thing. Lot of practise work is done on those consumer cards, specially on 90 class. And to produce sufficient quantity you need also other market. So getting CUDA-cards to developers who do light AI work to keep ecosystem dominant you need to sell them cards. And they can't be multi ten-thousand cards. If they didn't have "affordable" cards they might jump somewhere else. And thus bigger product from someone else might come popular.

AMD cards are absolute shitshow for AI apart from few specific softwares. Imagine if enough people put enough work to get them work...

Volume and marketing. Everyone knows about Intel because they've been THE CPU manufacturer for the past 40 years. Everybody knows Radeon because they've been dominating console gaming since the Wii. Unless you're a PC gamer, an engineer building supercomputers, or a hardcore Nintendo fanboy, though, you don't know who nvidia is. Cutting their gaming division would eliminate any reason that anyone but the biggest, most soy dweebs would have to know who the fuck Jensen Huang is or what his company does. As it stands, at least for now the executives making purchasing decisions and putting ink to paper have sons who are constantly yapping about how they want the latest NVidia card, so that gives them some familiarity with NVidia's name and their general product quality.

Because in addition to volume, marketing, etc. it's also another revenue stream that is fairly low risk due to a lack of competition at the higher end. AMD hasn't produced a card that competes with nvidia's top end for years at this point, and Intel is only on their 2nd generation of cards(and took a decade before getting the first generation out the door) and has finally started to hit the mid range market.

Other than low end cards staying in production for extended periods of time(like the 710 and a couple other low end 700 series nvidia cards, and I think the 1050 or 1060?) they generally don't have leftover inventory collecting dust on shelves for months after a new set of releases comes out(also due to cutting production toward the end of a product lifecycle) so it's no problem for them to sell cut down versions of their GPUs to AIB manufacturers to slap RGB bullshit onto and then flip to the gaming market. And even then, nvidia gets to treat the AIB vendors poorly to the point of EVGA just giving up because they got sick of low margins, not getting the pricing until the last minute(after designing coolers), etc. but that gap was immediately filled by Asus, Gigabite, MSI, Zotac, etc willingly buying up what would have been EVGA's share of chips from nvidia.
Ever notice when GN releases an expose that all the leeches come out with a video on the topic? HUB, jay, are prime examples.
Oh yeah, they've all done it for years now. But even before GN, it was happening whenever HardOCP did something similar. Jay is frankly annoying, doesn't have an original video thought in his head, and just does goofy ridiculous(and horrendously expensive) watercooling builds(unless he finally doesn't have someone to sponsor them anymore after all of the bs with EK). HUB at least created their monitors unboxed channel and provides a niche set of information there that isn't simply copying GN or is just treating components like legos on a weekly basis to make colorful builds to look at like Jay.

Describing Intel as "the CPU manufacturer" for forty years ignores a vast amount of market dominance Intel had, including marketing, The volume often being a result of it.

I'm an autistic moron and no, your equivalence of AMD's overall volume in consoles versus the reputation of NVIDIA's Geforce marketing are not the same.

The reason that GPUs are not the same and why NVIDIA's market cap is what it is involves general purpose computing applications is that Jensen (Jen-Hsun) Huang correctly called out that hey that won't matter in the end.

NVIDIA is horrible for a number of reasons, down to them pushing a shitty fire hazrd power connector "just because", but your argument that the AMD chips are done and people only buy NVIDIA is equally braindead.

Both consumer lines are marketing as well as binning shittier chips that enterprise won't take off. That's it. AMD/NVIDIA/Intel have had hot shit at some points and tried to pass off dogshit as hotshit. None of these companies are your friend, and they all lie.

Speaking of GN, I wonder if anything will come out of his offer to meet with Linus/Luke at Computex, since they're all there right now. Spoiler: it won't.

Meanwhile GN is actually looking at products, talking to companies, and producing multiple videos without having 100 employees. Here Steve has a chat with a CTO about a product and their thoughts on fan benchmarks
Meanwhile the most technical thing that Linus has looked at and posted a video for is talking about some products regarding the 12v nvidia connector crap

His stupid gold videocard slop? Where he was paid with a videocard by the manufacturer?

"The attention to detail is like I don't think I've ever seen from these guys before". While showing uneven heatsink fins, including one that's fucking bent just after taking it out of the box.
