‘Her rise was meteoric’: Pootoogook drawing named one of 21st century’s best works - Art Is Dead.

A drawing by famed Nunavut artist the late Annie Pootoogook has been named one of the best artworks of the 21st century by ARTNews, a magazine based in New York City.

That shouldn’t come as a surprise, says William Huffman.

“Her rise was meteoric; it was amazing,” said Huffman, arts administrator and curator at the West Baffin Eskimo Co-Operative in Kinngait, where Pootoogook was a member artist.

“Once people started paying attention, everyone started paying attention.”

He said her early art was “quotidian,” or everyday slice of Inuit life. Later, her work became more challenging.

The drawing singled out by ARTNews is titled Man Abusing His Partner. It depicts a man holding a large piece of wood and a woman crying, gripping the bed beneath her as the man approaches.

Huffman said the scene is very modern and something people from all over the world can understand, yet there are also certain elements — parkas hanging on a wall, a sealskin blanket on the bed — that place it very much in an Inuit household.

Inuit art typically has particular motifs, such as seals or polar bears, animals, people and scenes from the Arctic. Pootoogook’s work, while very Inuit, was also very modern and depicted scenes of contemporary Inuit life and culture, Huffman said.

In her magazine article published March 5, Anne Doran — who is an accomplished artist herself — noted that Pootoogook, who comes from a long line of Inuit artists in Cape Dorset, now Kinngait, wasn’t the first Inuit artist to take on modern themes.

“Both Ashoona, Annie Pootoogook’s grandmother, and Napachie Pootoogook, her mother, however, were among the first Inuit artists to create autobiographical artworks,” Doran wrote.

“Following their example, [Annie] Pootoogook likewise based her drawings on personal experience, including her struggles with addiction and —as here — abusive relationships.”

Speaking of the Man Abusing His Partner work by Pootoogook, Huffman said, “The moment that this work was revealed publicly, suddenly it changed what people thought Inuit art could be capable of.”

Pootoogook struggled with drug and alcohol addiction for much of her life, sometimes living on the streets of Ottawa. On Sept. 19, 2016, her body was found near the Rideau River. Though her death was ruled suspicious, no arrests have been made.

A park in Ottawa was posthumously renamed in her honour. She was 47 when she died.

I heard of Annie Pootoogook and the saddest part of her works is that they are extremely derivative of her mother's. An entire generation of artists and zero development to speak of. Not like the art is impressive on its own, but still, I would expect at least some originality or minor improvement upon the work of your parents. Inuit and Abbo art really is hopeless.

Her mother's works aren't masterpieces, but they show far more talent than the kindergarten-tier drawings that she made. The second one is actually striking.

miserable prick who believed humanity should be miserable and depressed while living in cities
Le Corbusier wanted to demolish the center of Paris (the part with the beautiful buildings), and replace it with a huge series of tall concrete apartment towers. All apartment buildings would be identical grey concrete, the same size and shape, with zero individuality allowed.

It's called Plan Voisin and it's pure evil in architecture form. Do an image search for "Plan Voisin" and see.

I just can't get over how fucked modern buildings are ever since I read about how basically all modern buildings exist because literally one guy was a miserable prick who believed humanity should be miserable and depressed while living in cities and this one guy basically came up with all of modern architecture.
I'm not even referring to the primordial evil that is modernist architecture or the eldritch monstrosity known as Le Corbusier. I was actually referring to the terrible conditions that most architects work in that are worse than graphic designers. It requires lengthy education but leads to long hours, high stress, little recognition and low pay while you churn out soulless monstrosities that actively make the public space worse. Much of the work is also highly formulaic and either standardized or automated away while the financial interests of developers erode the few good things remaining in the profession. Graphic designers can at least launch a Patreon and start drawing furry porn. Architects are just fucked.

The technical term is "outsider art".
To me 2 key components of true outsider art is 1. Scale and 2. A reluctence to exhibit/pursue an art career.

Look at In the Realms of the Unreal or The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations' Millennium. Both were massive undertakings that are simply jaw dropping in scale and the compulsive nature of their creation. Further, both are almost "found art" in the sense that someone with art literacy found them, presented and contextualize them in a way the art world would understand and value.

These are just some Eskimo's scribbles.

I've read a lot about that guy. It's so fucked up. He really doesn't get enough credit for just how straight up evil he is.

That's fair enough. I've only met a few architects in my life and they were pretty quiet generally about their work. I guess that would explain why they didn't really talk about it much. Though there was one guy I met that was pretty proud of some of the big buildings in the city that he designed.

But on the other hand. I think about the high rises and modern apartments I saw built over the 2010's and all the stupid modern artistic flairs that were designed into the buildings and I can't help but think maybe it's better off that modern architects don't get to be creative. Probably the most retarded one I remember is this stupid apartment block where every balcony has this random iron chain hanging down beside it. Obviously after a few years in the rain, the iron starts to rust, so now there's a bunch of permanent brownish red rust stains on the sidewalks around the apartment building where the rust water drips off the chains.

Edit: because I just remembered it's even more retarded. The fucking chains are hanging over the pathways that lead to the patio doors for the ground floor suites. The drips and stains are literally in the middle of the walking path.

Graphic designers have been annoying about computers since the print days. They actively refuse to utilize technology to their benefit and will whine and complain for hours about computers taking their jobs even though most of them can't do actual professional page layout or typesetting and probably couldn't even tell you the difference between a vector and raster graphic.

Those two pieces are true modern art. They're fucking incredible and if you Kiwis reading this dont know what they are, you need to Google them immediately.

The art world is a metaphoric representation of the races. Remove the White, and you remove all beauty from the human species.
I've noticed an increase in black/Hispanic artists churning out slop Chris Chan could outdo getting prioritized in elite art spaces and museums. There are in fact incredibly talented black/Hispanic artists out there, but these are never the ones who get shows. It's the artists creating shallow, low effort garbage with themes/aesthetics that play up their minority status that get attention.

When you go to shows in these spaces, you can tell that everybody knows the art is dog shit, but you'll never hear them say it out loud. It's a an "Emperor Has No Clothes" style circle jerk between the talentless, trend-chasing progressive elite and said minority artist who thinks they're the next Picaso because they've had so much smoke blown up their dumb nigger ass. The "white savior complex" also plays a major factor in this shit because the art is just that shitty.

I always liked to think this shit was the inspiration for megacities in Judge Dredd.

In many ways it was. Judge Dredd first appeared in 1977. Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, these brutalist hellscapes were the supposedly bright future being inflicted on everyone. And by the llate 1970s alot of people had turned on that sort of sterile inhuman architecture. It often became symbolic of distopia.

This 'art' is really a shitpost. Only thing that would top it all off is if Christine would get her works put in some Museum kind of like Aramaki did with Jojo in the Louvre. Enshrine Sonichu in the Smithsonian.

If you're gonna go clownshoes, put on the whole clown outfit or don't do it at all.

Oh my fucking God. Can we stop pretending some frost-bitten-bitch, whose people haven't seen a piece of paper in 5,000 years and who draws in cave painting perspective with NGO provisioned crayons, is an art prodigy? "Oh wow! She is at least as good at art as my 10 year old daughter but her relatives get shitfaced drunk and club seals.!? Amazing!"

It's one thing to showcase this stuff as the fly on the wall peek into the sub-zero lifestyle it is.... but can we cut the part where we pretend this is fucking Rembrandt? Leftist society is starting to feel like a goddamn minstrel show. Equality is a false god.
