Comically (or perversely, I can't decide), seat belts in cars are useless for a majority of the population. Children are too small to be properly restrained. The shoulder belt doesn't engage the sternum, and children don't weigh enough to activate the inertia reel. Children are also not heavy enough to survive the airbag inflation. Most adults are too heavy to be properly restrained. Seat belts were never designed to hold 300+ lbs at 20-40g of acceleration in an accident.
