Allow me to posit a hypothetical to the both of you.
Millennial aged individual works various jobs through the 2000s-2020, ranging from entry-level retail, all the way to working for a very large household name multinational software company. While this person is fully self supportive, saving money was difficult, given they were born with a common but life-altering autoimmune disorder.
Still, they worked diligently, up until the past several years after circumstances forced them to quit their job at said company to return home (like a good member of their generation) at the age of 40 to help take care of family. In doing so, this person inherits a substantial amount of money, allowing them a few decades of not working - even indulging in their interest in the arts - and live comfortably, and taking care of their parents. During this time, further autoimmune disorders appear, adding further difficulty in securing further employment.
This person is on Medicaid, the only welfare they receive. No SSI, no social security - which they did pay into - will most likely be forthcoming. Hell, this person is even a staunch Trump supporter.
Should they not feel just a little screwed by this decision?
