George RR Martin, his fanboys, and former fanbase

people dont realize how much of a shitty edgy writer this fat fuck is. what the fuck is this gart ennis shit

I've never read these dumb books but I have skimmed some entries and have been exposed to their ideas via internet osmosis and I remember the passage that convinced me that I shouldn't read them. It was about slingers practicing their slinging technique by casually propelling bullets into the knees of slaves, exploding their legs in a shower of gore.

That's not good. For a few reasons. It's edgy, it's stupid, and it betrays a view of humans that is sick. People just aren't that cruel, and never have been, in any era of history. Outside of individual psychos and serial killers, no one acts like that.

GRRM is a dipshit sheltered hippie who walks around suspecting that normal people are as violent and mean as he thinks they are. In reality, 99% of people who have ever lived are basically gentle social creatures who like others and want to be liked and don't get off on inflicting pain.

Anyway I'm not shitting on anyone who enjoys the books. Not 'yucking your yum' as faggots the kids say. I just wanted to rant about this because this fat fuck and his warped worldview don't get enough criticism.

This reminds me of one of the (very few) issues I had with the excellent first season of Westworld.

I know the park guests are self-selecting. I know the guests have been told none of what happens with the "hosts" is real because the hosts are just robots. I know it's one big game.

But even so, it was hard to just accept the degree to which the show had an extremely misanthropic view of humanity. The Man in Black is one thing... he's a unique monster. (The origins of which are kind of cringe, but that's for a different discussion.) But normal park goers are regularly seen brutalizing the hosts, and I just didn't believe it. You couldn't present most people with a screaming, crying, bleeding "person" and not have them react the same way they would to a real person.

Maybe this kind of fits into the show's gnostic theme of the flawed nature of the world (the park) created by a false God (Anthony Hopkins's character) where the only salvation is to recognize that falseness and destroy it. (Humans being a part of that false, cruel reality.) But I never fully bought into it.

Anyway, I warned someone recently not to even start reading the aSoFaI books since GRRM will never finish them. I hope the fat, lazy fuck somehow felt that like a disturbance in the Force, and it made him mad.

In George's defense, the Unsullied as the product of Essos, a society that we're told to be backwards and insanely primitive, aside from very specific cities.

Unintentionally based.

because you cant write your way out of a retarded ending that everyone hated
A good writer can do it. It's fiction, it's not an impossible task. Gurm doesn't feel like it.

What is even the point? You purposely raise a slave for his entire life for a glorified pikeman? Like yeah having good discipline is important in that type of military unit, and some of those units were historically extremely powerful, but not to this extent of insanity. This kind of money would be better spent training those children to be a jack of all trade warriors that can fulfill as many role on the battlefield as needed, making them incredibly versatile to fill any holes, while also having them loyal enough to go on suicide attacks a la' Fremen.
In his defense, late medieval pikemen were highly effective and very sought after units - Swiss pikemen, German Landsknechts and Spanish tercios were some of the most effective military units/formations of their day.

What the fat kike fails to realize is that it wasn't just them being pikemen that made them so effective, but also the élan and esprit de corps they embodied. These troops were just as much a product of their ethnicity and culture as they were of their training and weapon of choice.

The Swiss were noted to be disciplined, but more importantly highly aggressive and highly mobile. On top of that, much like the Roman maniples, their officers were able to take the initiative and exploit a situation if they saw an opportunity.

Other than the discipline part, the Unsullied lack any of the other aspects that made medieval pikemen so effective. They're as close as robots as you can turn humans into, their lack of testosterone limits both the length of pike they can wield and the speed at which they can carry it, and just like the Dothraki, they're apparently a homogenous type of unit, consisting only of pikemen, while IRL formations were a combination of pikemen, troops wielding halberds, swords, zweihanders and other "shock" weapons and ranged troops like crossbowmen or gunners.

The funny part is that Westeros already possesses proper, European pikemen formations, instead of outdated Macedonian or Greek phalanxes, so the Unsullied would realistically have a very, very bad time fighting against those. Not only would the Westerosi pikes outreach theirs, but they'd be constantly peppered by the intermixed ranged troops, and would probably get rushed by the troops equipped with close in weapons.

Bro... do you even have a tax policy?

Look, have you seen how people play video games when given the chance to commit cruelty without significant consequence? It wouldn't surprise me if people would start engaging in violent fantasies on robots knowing that they'll just be rebuilt afterwards.

The Unsullied are what happens when you're an edgy fantasy writer who wants an even more "hardcore super soldier" version of the Sardaukar for your book series, but you know even less about warrior societies or military training than Herbert. So you invent some weird uber-Spartan training regimen and just keep adding layers to it because it's not "bad-ass enough yet".
It is also stupid as hell, why would they fight so hard? The way they are raised means they have no culture, no gods, no real motivations for being effectively suicidally unwilling to break formation.

Samwise and Frodo go above and beyond expectations because as far as they know Gandalf died for their quest.

The Aiel are badass and determined to the point of insanity because they are trying to redeem their people breaking their oaths of pacifism

Doomguy wants revenge for his Bunny.

What are the unsullied fighting for? Hope that someone can find their balls?

They fight because they're told to. In their world, there is nothing else, they do as they're told and don't complain or ask for anything. No one gives them options or see them as people and they act as expected.

That's why eventually they side with Dany. I guess that's the point. They worked as an army of lobotomised eunuchs as long as their masters treat the like this.

But they dont fight for danny for that reason, she buys the entire lot then has them insanely turn around and murder the slave traders.

The Sims is one of the most popular games ever in no small part due to the fact that it gives a ton of open-ended creativity for how you interact with the game world. Minecraft is the same way. I'm not saying that no one would be cruel to the hosts, but the idea that everyone would be a psycho to fake people who are nevertheless very much on the wrong side of the uncanny valley is just plain small-minded.

And yet they never take the initiative to start giving the orders as IRL slave armies eventually do. For the guys with the weapons and numbers and training they should be able to figure this one out.

Even ignoring thr biological facets, the psychological aspects of the Unsullied are ridiculous- this primitive society has discovered a level of mind control/indoctrination that the Soviets and MKULTRA never even got close to.

IIRC when Bioware released the numbers for how many people did what paths and all of that in games like Mass Effect and Dragonage..weren't the majority good guy play throughs?

It's classic case of thinking that being really really good at one facet of combat means you eventually gives you super powers, in this case discipline. They are basically 40k Servitors, which raises the issue that they'll only be as effective as their commander. And thus only worthwhile against literal retards who don't change their tactics. Which to be fair is pretty fitting the the backstory.

It reminds me of the joke in Austin Powers with henchmen families and friends
It's less funny when you hear the victim screams (for the majority of people).

New Game of Thrones game dropped a few days ago and I don't believe it warrants its own separate thread. Feels like there were no advertisements for it, as I saw it by chance on Twitch. Seems like it is just a RDR2 game with a GoT skin plastered on it.

Worse, he literally has them drinking a retarded magical potion that causes them to develop nerve damage so they feel no pain (ala that recent Novocain movie), but it never occurred to him to just make impotence a side-effect and avoid castrating toddlers and expecting the reader to believe they grow up into effective close-quarters fighters.
That's another level of retardation, because pain is literally a warning signal, telling us that something is fucking wrong.

Having no sense of pain can help a soldier in a very limited number of situations, usually situations when most people are already high on adrenaline and might not feel even a fatal wound until the fight is over.

Lacking sense of pain can hurt a soldier, especially a soldier raised to me mechanically obedient, in a very wide number of situations. Dying from marching yourself to death was already distressingly common in wars. Now imagine a soldier who can't feel his bloody sores before they get infected, and is conditioned to do what he's commanded to do until he loses all ability to move.

There is a reason why in more sensible works of fiction pain/fear inhibitors tend to come with an "off switch", or are applied to large masses of easily recruitable cannon fodder.

Idiot writers often conflate "not feeling pain" with invincibility and to a lesser extent immortality. It is their misguided attempt at displaying a character as being super strong. It is their misunderstanding as to what constitutes strength that leads to stuff like this.
