It's just him giving his supporters something to parrot when they argue online that "GRRM is not your bitch". Next time someone starts mocking GRRM for procrastination or failing his life's work they will just spew out "Oh yeah....GRRM wrote ten miniseries, four novellas, and two videogames between ADWD and his death.....what did you do in that time?". As if GRRM did anything other than lend his name to various projects just for a producer's credit or a paycheck. He's also definitely changed some of his plotlines based on fans predicting them which is something that he vociferously denies. He also clearly read all of the criticism of the HBO show which affected his ability to write. He knows that finishing his life's work using his original notes will only lead to the entire world deriding him as a hack who wrote a meandering mess that finished disastrously. He mocked all those mystery box writers then become possibly the worst example of that in history.

But GRRM never knew when to shut up. Tons of writers and actors go to comic cons and promotional events and are cordial. They are always professional in interviews. GRRM is the idiot spewing off about Aragorn's tax policy and ripping on other writers and television shows left and right. Constantly antagonizing fans and mixing it up with people working adaptations of his books in public and messy ways.

In ten or twenty years people will read the ASOIAF books and realize that they were always horrible.

As I've said, the TV show was his intended ending. We've seen his ending. We hate his ending. He's panicking because he wants to be the anti-Tolkien and make an ending that's superior to LOTR in a subversive way. He wants to make an ending that screws over most of his characters, ends with his crippled self-insert becoming King by default, and leaves no audience members happy except maybe Rian Johnson. He knows he can't do this without destroying his entire literary legacy.

In the end, he'll primarily be known for introducing tits, gore, and indiscriminate main character death to High Fantasy. Considering that Low Fantasy had been doing such things for years, it wasn't even that impressive a feat.

I have to deal with at most 10% of the complexity of ASOIAF in my own creative writings so I understand the feeling of being overwhelmed in wanting to make sure the story, characters and world line up together to hit that believability threshold before handing it off to others to read. Doing it alone is hard work.

But George, please. I know projects other than the Winds of Winter are exciting and more fulfilling and easier, but the time to ask for help was ten years ago. If you'd put that pride and ego aside and asked your many talented author friends and assistants to help you wrangle this monster, the series would've been over and you'd be free to do whatever without people being upset.

GRRM would rather whine about Donald Trump on his blog rather than actually write. - I had already quit ASOIAF some time ago for more reasons than one, but this is the final nail in the coffin. Fourteen years is well enough time to write a book. And everyone knows it's going to be hundreds of pages of more explicit depravity, like who wants to sit down and read that? How is reading that good for people's mental health, and how it is that people could have clung on to this for this long is beyond me.
