Once again the leaks about the movie were 100% accurate. Removing characters, changing the entire meaning of the movie to be the opposite of the original. The writers were so sheltered they couldn't even make a convincing argument why Nani had to leave.
Comparison of the ohana means family scene https://xcancel.com/CocoaFox023/status/1926088618113708201

I CANNOT believe I forgot this one, but the grandma also encourages Nani to pursue college at the end by stating that Ohana "also means not leaving yourself behind." Whatever... that means.
Jesus Christ, this is unbelivable. Fucking vile.

Isn't Ohana an actual Hawaiian word specifically referring to family

The family means nobody is left behind thing just applies to the word "family" not "Ohana"

Ohana means family, and family means that gay couple that really wants to adopt for some reason.

And before you say that gay guys wouldn’t have interest in Lilo, remember that Moira Greyland’s father dressed her up as a boy when he raped her- and his rapes were the nicer ones compared to her lesbian mother.

You'd think the writers having a poor familial relationship would drive them to adhere to the main story or any stories message of love and family overcoming hardship and division. You got JRR Tolkien who personally participated in World War 1 and wrote a story about peoples from all over the world getting together to fight evil and mend the world for the people they love. Then you get modern media, where some guy in California got told by his father that theres only 2 genders so he makes it his life goal to never show a successful marriage in any piece of media until the sun burns out.

That's just horrible. Imagine watching the remake as a child. Wouldn't you be scared that your family would abandon you? "Oh, it's just a clip without context-" The context makes it even worse! The portal gun doesn't mean much when the family's still apart.

One day the argument “It’s for kids, whatever!” and its variants will die. Today is not that day.

I saw them. Whether they’re baiting or not, it’s still a good example of “Eh quality doesn’t matter here, who cares,” only for people to turn around and ask why everything is so terrible. Also, a writer being Native Hawaiian is no excuse for this, especially with how Hawaiian culture is. You like California so much? Then write your own shit about California! With Californian values, like unfair resource allocation, child grooming, and nihilism. If it’s “no big deal,” then don’t do it in the first place.

I’m just sick of people crowing about “representation with authentic voices,” while insisting that everything has to cater to 8% of the population. If that.

This is what you get when you wokify a movie that was already everything that woke people say they want. There was really nowhere else to go with it.

The mayonnaise ghoul behind the original tried to celebrate Hawaii and its culture. Then they let a Native fix it with his authentic lived experiences, which turns out to be: less ohana, more hakuna matata. Apparently he grew up in Hawaii and studied in Cali, so maybe he's working through some personal demons here. The part where the six-year-old orphan says that she wants her mother figure to leave and pursue a career is surely some kind of wish-fulfillment fantasy.

I really do wonder what actual Hawaiian natives (without a degree from a Cali private school) think about this, and the original.

I almost choked given how Chris Sanders looks lol.

But yes, while he wanted to celebrate Hawaii, he especially has a thing for them thicc Hawaiian girls and wanted to showcase that. Something tells me the people involved in the remake didn't like that.

Its made worse by the fact that Lilo is also lonely and has interests and beliefs that are considered bizarre and unconventional by everyone around her, besides her sister and the aliens who later become apart of her family. Shes also grieving the recent deaths of her parents. Leaving your actual small child sister during the most crucial and in her personal case, traumatic portion of their life is downright evil in any context. And remember in the original, Cobra only takes Lilo away after their entire house is blown to hell while Nani is away.

I'm amused that Chris Sanders was so taken by these quaint little native things like ohana and hula dancing and the mythology and so on. Then we let the Authentic Indigenous voice do his version, and he gives very few fucks about any of that kitschy tourist stuff, and alters the story to be about consuming social services.
