US Mike Johnson claims Medicaid cuts are teaching a ‘moral’ lesson to young men - The Republican speaker of the House insists changes to Medicaid are about cutting “waste and abuse,” as well as improving men’s “dignity.”

The Republican speaker of the House says his party is going to achieve its deeply unpopular cuts to Medicaid via the “moral component” of protecting manhood.

Speaker Mike Johnson went on “Face the Nation” on Sunday and defended the House’s passage of a bill that institutes massive cuts — potentially $880 billion over 10 years — to Medicaid, a program 1 in 5 Americans rely on, claiming there are no cuts. Rather, he said, Republicans’ new work requirements are meant to end “fraud, waste and abuse” by forcing “able-bodied workers, young men” to get a job.

In the interview, Johnson responded to a question about the potential widespread loss of health care, including tens of thousands of people who stand to lose health care in his home state, by baselessly insisting the only people who stand to be impacted by the GOP’s proposals are “able-bodied workers, many of whom are refusing to work because they’re gaming the system.”

“You’re cheating the system,” the speaker said at one point. “And no one in the country believes that that’s right. So there’s a moral component to what we’re doing. And when you make young men work, it’s good for them, it’s good for their dignity, it’s good for their self-worth, and it’s good for the community that they live in.”

Even if one takes as gospel Johnson’s suggestion that U.S. policymakers should be making an individual’s access to health care contingent on their “dignity” or “self-worth,” his framing this around young men arguably meets the literal definition of sexism.

But more fundamentally, the speaker and the Trump administration are relying on shoddy logic to make their argument for work requirements. Los Angeles Times columnist Michael Hiltzik explained recently how the GOP’s rhetoric about a purported crisis of jobless men grifting off the Medicaid system is rooted in years of propaganda that has portrayed people who rely on such programs as leeches — even though the real data tells a different story.

Hiltzik wrote:
Work rules for Medicaid are the product of a misconception about Medicaid enrollees, which is that they’re the employable unemployed. According to census figures, however, 44% of Medicaid recipients worked full time in 2023 and 20% worked part time. An additional 12% were not working because they were taking care of family at home, 10% were ill or disabled, 6% were students, and 4% were retired. Of the remaining 4%, half couldn’t find work and the remaining 2% didn’t give a reason.

In other words, a majority of the people who receive Medicaid are already working.

An estimate from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found the proposed cuts could leave at least 8.6 million people without health care by 2034. And that seems to be at least part of the reason 76% of Americans oppose major cuts to Medicaid, according to polling the Kaiser Family Foundation conducted in April.

But Republican lawmakers, many of whom are white-collar workers who’ve spent years receiving taxpayer-subsidized health care via their government jobs, have been trying to convince American men that the path to true manhood is only achieved through struggle — whether that’s via a return to grueling factory work or, according to Johnson, to retain one’s access to Medicaid.

This manipulative politicking, which teaches that true manhood means suffering, is a primary reason I’ve taken an interest in chronicling what I’ve come to call “MAGA masculinity” over the past year or so. Last year, I released a series on hypermasculinity in the conservative movement that focused on the podcasters and political figures who seem intent on using some men’s self-esteem and a perpetual sense of victimhood to advance conservative values.

This post I wrote, about how the MAGA movement’s hypermasculine ideals threaten men’s health, seems quite relevant in light of Johnson’s focus on what he calls “able-bodied” young men as waste and fraud where Medicaid is concerned.

For more on how the MAGA movement has weaponized manhood, check out my appearance on MSNBC with Alex Witt last month that focused heavily on the topic:

GOP and mainstream Dems can't handle not being corrupt, money printing excessively, creating an impending economic crisis, which the next generation or two will have to pick up the pieces. If you thought Trump and DOGE could truly make any change in this regard, you've been brainwashed. Trump is still just a GOP, just a more radical populist.

Over the next few generations, lessons will continue to be forgotten, and the average person and those in power will become more radical until the dam finally bursts in some way, probably in the 2060s range, maybe earlier. Something will happen...

If you want to make men actually want to work, then you need to stop encouraging corps to hire eight billion Indians via the H1-B program, find some reasonable measure to discourage the greybeards who refuse to retire and free up job-space for future generations when they already have ample pensions and retirement payouts incoming, and crack down on the discriminatory hiring practices centered around arbitrary college degrees and impossible experience windows for allegedly entry-level positions. Or maybe incentivize actual work programs explicitly for young American men like training-to-hire programs for new public works and infrastructure if you want men to have "dignity" - then they can at least work on things they could potentially be proud of and see tangibly improve their environment. Chinks actually do this, it's why they build eight hundred million styrofoam buildings that last like two months, it gives their young men something to actually do and opportunities to work.

Young men are effectively not allowed to work in any non-humiliating or non-lethal position because the current system incentivizes hiring everyone except them. Medicaid requirements won't change that since most of them already aren't on medicaid, they're on the other medical plan of "Pray the car that hits them kills them in the same blow." I'm still losing my tax dollars to spics and niggers raising litters of 80 and collecting all that welfare, the work requirements aren't going to matter to these parasites, and the number of NEETs my tax dollars actually went to could be counted on one hand if you actually breakdown who receives the most tax-funded handouts.

Incredible waste of bill signing while pretending they're doing literally anything other than writing in circles.

this is it, its shocking how easy it was to find a job during covid when it stopped the H1-bs from flooding in for awhile, i felt like a thin white woman the way basically any job i applied to they responded within the day, one time within minutes.

the job i took in 2021 even bullied me, they asked "when can you start" i said the usual 2 weeks and they said "are you sure you can't start earlier?" and tried to get me on board even sooner. it was insane.

2021 was the last time you could get a job, 2022 was the last time you could buy a house and now they're torturing anyone that has tried to move beyond the place they were 4 years ago.

So all it took for fellow kiwis to turn on their master was the disapearance of their gibs? :story:
I don't think anyone is actually mad about the work requirement, but how they are acting like they are somehow saving men and their weird moral righteousness.
Saying the shit he did is a great way for people to hate you and your party. Blindly dick sucking your side and defending retarded politicians is how you lose.

I'm an old man, I'm used to work and I started before the game got completely rigged, but I can absolutely understand some 18 year old not wanting to buy into that system and the only real protest they can make is not participating.
This is what I wonder too.
What if you're trying to do an upstart business too? You're working on your own business or job and the money isn't very profitable but its enough to start to get by. I'm curious how you self report those hours. cause what if you put 60 a week in for yourself but aren't making that much starting out.

People voted for the billionaire class and are surprised that they care very little for the common citizen. It's important to remember that Billionaires operate like actual fantasy dragons: They want as much money as possible and will burn anyone who stands in their way. The United States Federal government represents trillions of dollars worth of personal wealth for them to amass; not a system to support a nation of 400 million people.

We all must work. That is life. I shouldn't have to pay for every Chris Chan and Tommy Tooter when those faggots can get a fucking job and pull at least some of their weight.
Not to be rude, but you're an uneducated laborer unaware of the unbelievable luxury that is afforded to people who extract value from your largely insignificant and repetitive labor. You aren't paying for Chris Chan's tugboat, but instead fuel the economy through the debt which you either directly take or enable.

Let's take the CDO market meltdown of 2008 as an example of how the average person is exploited by financial institutions to fuel their infinite greed. To put it bluntly, your role on this Earth is to take on debt. You work so that richer men can bet on the likelihood of your default. The size of these bets and the synthetics created with them is magnitudes larger than the debt which actually underpins them. In essence, your little contribution to the economy serves as justification to create money in quantity that is actually significant. In this case, subprime mortgages were used to create a bubble of abstract financial products that were traded like a hot potato between the world's richest people. Ultimately, it was America's poorest who paid the price for the rich playing around with debt.

The poor aren't your enemy and you have more in common with Chris Chan than the people who truly benefit from your labor.

so if he works 40 hours because he isn't a fucking slave and shouldn't require overtime to survive
if there's nothing in the budget for entertainment then there's nothing stopping him from working overtime. if he wants it he can work for it. the days of 1 man working and feeding and housing a wife and 2 kids hasn't been true for decades and im near 50. for some people it'll be 2 jobs. others still, will have to temper their dreams to match their skills and work ethic which is maybe an apartment or living with their parents. they can drop out if they want but the political climate will swing back importing 3rd worlders who'll snatch the neets' dreams by working 3 jobs.

that's been reality for a long while.

You don't work you don't eat. I don't give a fuck about the system. I want every nigger, NEET, lolcow, and junkie to be forced to grow up, get a job, and stop being a bum. Once they are working, they will learn to behave like a civilized creature. Work does wonders for the soul
While I agree with you that people need to be productive, work is souless and shit in my experience. Granted that's not ALWAYS the case but most of the time my cowokers arw backstabbing shitheals and upper managment only cares about profit.

Needing to waste your time and getting shipped off hours away to work in Niggerland while making no money to get shitty insurance is monstrous.

Like I work but wouldn't these people be better served by looking for jobs that pay?

If the republicans want traction they need to stop the boomer shit.
-Send the niggers back to Liberia
-End dual citizenship with Israel
-Nuke Mexico

Those are policies that have legs.

May I wish you happy a perish, yah old fuck. Our fathers and father's fathers fought and died for what we are asking. Labor is honest, and thats why i'll always be on the side of working men. Nobody is gonna bite on "Maybe just be a lil workaday faggo-drone and you'll see some improvements ;)" nor should they. Your "Well, get with the times or they'll get you" will not work on young men who are very, very pissed off. No healthy or lasting society ever told it's able bodied, native young men to eat shit and enjoy it and this one won't be an exception.

Whatever it is, it certainly doesn't sound like "forever"

Like with reality TV and other modern brainrot, I think the real danger this site poses is that a lot of users get a little too complacent when they're able to see people worse off then them so easily and without any sympathetic (not that many of them deserve it, but still) light. Punching down is very easy and very distracting from the fact you are also getting punched down on too. You can't blame any lolcow for turning housing into an unaffordable, monopolized investment that you are only allowed to rent for the rest of your peasant life.
