US Mike Johnson claims Medicaid cuts are teaching a ‘moral’ lesson to young men - The Republican speaker of the House insists changes to Medicaid are about cutting “waste and abuse,” as well as improving men’s “dignity.”

The Republican speaker of the House says his party is going to achieve its deeply unpopular cuts to Medicaid via the “moral component” of protecting manhood.

Speaker Mike Johnson went on “Face the Nation” on Sunday and defended the House’s passage of a bill that institutes massive cuts — potentially $880 billion over 10 years — to Medicaid, a program 1 in 5 Americans rely on, claiming there are no cuts. Rather, he said, Republicans’ new work requirements are meant to end “fraud, waste and abuse” by forcing “able-bodied workers, young men” to get a job.

In the interview, Johnson responded to a question about the potential widespread loss of health care, including tens of thousands of people who stand to lose health care in his home state, by baselessly insisting the only people who stand to be impacted by the GOP’s proposals are “able-bodied workers, many of whom are refusing to work because they’re gaming the system.”

“You’re cheating the system,” the speaker said at one point. “And no one in the country believes that that’s right. So there’s a moral component to what we’re doing. And when you make young men work, it’s good for them, it’s good for their dignity, it’s good for their self-worth, and it’s good for the community that they live in.”

Even if one takes as gospel Johnson’s suggestion that U.S. policymakers should be making an individual’s access to health care contingent on their “dignity” or “self-worth,” his framing this around young men arguably meets the literal definition of sexism.

But more fundamentally, the speaker and the Trump administration are relying on shoddy logic to make their argument for work requirements. Los Angeles Times columnist Michael Hiltzik explained recently how the GOP’s rhetoric about a purported crisis of jobless men grifting off the Medicaid system is rooted in years of propaganda that has portrayed people who rely on such programs as leeches — even though the real data tells a different story.

Hiltzik wrote:
Work rules for Medicaid are the product of a misconception about Medicaid enrollees, which is that they’re the employable unemployed. According to census figures, however, 44% of Medicaid recipients worked full time in 2023 and 20% worked part time. An additional 12% were not working because they were taking care of family at home, 10% were ill or disabled, 6% were students, and 4% were retired. Of the remaining 4%, half couldn’t find work and the remaining 2% didn’t give a reason.

In other words, a majority of the people who receive Medicaid are already working.

An estimate from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found the proposed cuts could leave at least 8.6 million people without health care by 2034. And that seems to be at least part of the reason 76% of Americans oppose major cuts to Medicaid, according to polling the Kaiser Family Foundation conducted in April.

But Republican lawmakers, many of whom are white-collar workers who’ve spent years receiving taxpayer-subsidized health care via their government jobs, have been trying to convince American men that the path to true manhood is only achieved through struggle — whether that’s via a return to grueling factory work or, according to Johnson, to retain one’s access to Medicaid.

This manipulative politicking, which teaches that true manhood means suffering, is a primary reason I’ve taken an interest in chronicling what I’ve come to call “MAGA masculinity” over the past year or so. Last year, I released a series on hypermasculinity in the conservative movement that focused on the podcasters and political figures who seem intent on using some men’s self-esteem and a perpetual sense of victimhood to advance conservative values.

This post I wrote, about how the MAGA movement’s hypermasculine ideals threaten men’s health, seems quite relevant in light of Johnson’s focus on what he calls “able-bodied” young men as waste and fraud where Medicaid is concerned.

For more on how the MAGA movement has weaponized manhood, check out my appearance on MSNBC with Alex Witt last month that focused heavily on the topic:

I'll be vague to avoid a PL but a lot of what costs Medicaid so much money isn't Shaniqua and her five kids or 25 year old gamer NEETs in their mom's basement,it's nursing homes scamming Medicaid by using the patients as a cash cow. They will have people in vegetative states and do stuff like give them constant colonoscopies and other tests. And they also charge Medicaid an arm and a leg for evey item the person uses. Like a plastic made in China bed pan will be charged $150 to Medicaid and of course they want the workers to remove those bedpans and replace them at regular intervals. That's on top of the fees they charge Medicaid for half of a tiny room for each of these residents. I know this because it was one of my duties working in one of these places to make sure all the products given to the residents for scanned so it could be charged to that person's Medicaid account, and also I had to prep these vegetable patients for their colonoscopies... the money sure as hell wasn't going to the workers.

Now I guess I'll be considered heartless for this but maybe the government should care more about people that will actually contribute to the future of this country like young working men and women who are having kids, rather than spending trillions to keep 90 year old vegetables alive.

If you want to end Medicaid fraud, nursing homes are where it's at.

Almost like Mike Johnson is a kike-loving fucking snake who is intentionally sinking the President's agenda.
I know, hard to believe. You wouldn't think as much based on his caving to fucking everything Democrats wanted right after he became Speaker, then putting Americans last in every piece of legislation since. But here we are.

E: Tucker just did an interview with Ron Johnson on the 'big, beautiful bill' and he's as fucking shamelessly evil/clueless as Mike Johnson. Probably not a coincidence both of their last names are synonyms for penis.
If you want your blood to boil even more for all of the reasons listed in this thread, go watch:

In most states you only need to work a mere 20 hours to get benefits and there's people here crying about having to actually work a job for at most three days out of the week so they can keep sucking down welfare that in their same breath cry about niggers and spics getting welfare and failing to see the irony

Maybe, but you're most likely misinterpreting it based on what I've seen in this thread so far. Saying it only takes 20 hours to get benefits isn't really fair to say. How much of your paycheck does it cost? What are the deductibles? Are you going to have to pay a thousand dollars or more out of your pocket every time you need to use your "benefits?" I've seen the benefit packages part-time jobs offer and it's damn near exploitative if you have a family you want to cover.
Personally I don't think 20 hours a week deserves medical coverage anyway, but that's not really the point.

Have you tried to get a shitty part time job lately, I've got young relatives trying to cut their teeth and let me tell you, it's not happening. Not when there's a desperate 30 year old that needs that job too.
It's a mess out there. Ages ago when I got my first mcjob the only place that would hire me was so far away and paid so little that I was losing money just to have insurance that legally permit me to drive to work and paying for the gas to get there working 20 hours. Just to justify even showing up I had to rack up so much overtime the district manager came to the store, chewed out the GM, and told me I take exactly what I'm scheduled and not a minute more.
I can only imagine how shitty it is many years, many more people, and many more corporate layoffs later.

And besides, keeping some young Americans healthy even if they arent working (lets be real, for whatever reason), is an infinitely more worthwhile cause for spending than securing Israel's existence, or feeding Africans, or being Europe's de facto defense force, or whatever other gay shit this guy probably doesn't mind.

Everyone is acting like you just soak up infinite money on medicaid: you use that when you get sick, injured, or are trying to prevent either with checkups. What exactly do you think these unemployed people are doing all day? Getting allergy screenings?

I consider that an excuse. Of course the job market depends on where you live but there's always "something" out there. People waiting for the perfect job to lineup for them will also be forever waiting because that's not how job searching works 99% of the time

I'm not arguing against keeping people healthy but reality shows people on benefits often look for excuses to stay on those benefits and not look for work. Adding requirements ensures they're at least putting some effort into the desired outcome of coming off the dole. And spare me the whataboutism, we spend more on social services than we do on foreign aid as is and acting as if not liking one means you excuse the other is disingenuous.

We spend more on boomers, not providing insurance to the able-bodied unemployed.

I consider that an excuse.
You could just say you haven't. There's no shame in not being on the bottom rung.
But to answer you, the reason people on benefits tend to stay on is because our system has a perverse incentive where the bottom of gainful employment is literally worse off than the top of government assistance. There's probably a name for it but I call it the valley of initiation, where you just get absolutely fucked the moment you try to do the neocon wet dream of grabbing your bootstraps.

For example, 20 hours a week at minimum wage will grant you a pre tax income at federal minimum wage of 600 dollars a month.

Do you know how much private insurance will cost you as this single young man that was previously on medicaid? Well if you want a your personal maximum expenditure for an emergency to be less than $5,000, depending on region, it'll run you about $400 a month. This is assuming your employer doesn't provide health benefits which they don't have to if you're part time.

So you can in theory find that job out there somewhere and work it for negative money and pay for your own insurance, or you can duke it out for a part time gig with benefits and a deductible that will still eat your check, but you'd be worse off in either circumstance than being on medicaid.

All you're going to do by putting a work requirement in the way is:
1. Lower part time wages because employers will know they are just a means to tax funded insurance anyway and fuck over people trying to turn that "something" job you.mentioned into a means of progression (it already isn't)
And
2. Totally fuck over the disabled or rural who don't have healthy job markets for reasons beyond their control.
If the government is so worried about what young men are doing, they should be working to remove the valley instead of shaving down tir basic level of medical care that's more useful than not as a public good.

Nah, you're right. There's also the fact that a lot of people just shove them in there and leech off their resources/etc. as long as they can.

But, sure, "powers that be", let's keep shitting on the younger generations. That won't end well, at all.

if they just said "lazy niggers should get a job" then everyone would be clapping
I personally think the anger is at Johnson singling out "young men" when its mostly welfare kweens and young niglets and illegal wetbacks that apply for those benefits the most.

And that's the rub. Yet these people almost certainly didn't vote Republican so there should be no problem! Sorry that your white neet friends can't die a death of despair jacking off at 11:30 am on a Tuesday from pizza roll poisoning or whatever. This is what a lot of you wanted.
It's funny because the only person I know in real life who this would affect is exactly as described in article. White, male, 24 and posts on 4chan like it's his job. Somehow managed to get some tism bucks bc of his unscrupulous white trash family is very adept at gaming the system but he's more than capable of working (and has previously but quit almost immediately bc he doesn't "like being told what to do"). And Looking at the contents of this thread he's definitely not alone.
Funnily enough all of the black and Hispanic people I know have jobs... sometimes multiple.

Or maybe incentivize actual work programs explicitly for young American men like training-to-hire programs for new public works and infrastructure if you want men to have "dignity" - then they can at least work on things they could potentially be proud of and see tangibly improve their environment.

Oh like something similar to jobcorps which they just cut....or americore which they also cut? Both free programs (they actually pay YOU even if it's a paltry amount) that helps to get young people skills to use in the work force?

That's not happening again. Republicans don't believe in shit like that and would rather make sure their buddies have enough money to start up their American-side Chinese factories in the upcoming years. But don't worry once we get company towns back there will be plenty of opportunities for serfdom and servitude. Not for you granted but your children can go back to working in dirty factories getting paid barely enough to live.

Oh I guess there's also always the military too if you wanted to go die for Israel.

The poor aren't your enemy and you have more in common with Chris Chan than the people who truly benefit from your labor.
So all it took for fellow kiwis to turn on their master was the disapearance of their gibs? :story:

Theres really only the party that serves the rich and the party that fucks the poor but everyone's too busy falling for the grift that they don't care that rich men are making sure everyone is as miserable and downtrodden as possible because it makes taking advantage much easier.
As long as you can say "those people" are costing you money you can get the population whipped into a frenzy while you rob them blind. Things are the way they are on purpose and blaming regular citizens with no say outside of voting same as you for the positions you elected just because you or your friends or relatives ended up being a casualty is retarded.

Our whole government model is pivoting to all stick and no carrot unless you're at the top. I can't help but feel that we will be moving closer and closer to war to cull the young male populace and poors because without opportunity there will be unrest and crime.

Unfortunately with the current ghouls running the country I don't see a way to improve the average Americans' way of life without [Insert Glow Post Here].

I know this might chap your ass a little to hear, but this just comes off as darkie seething.

Ok, can we agree that "nobody will give them a job" is retard shit?

Eta: and another thing... my business isn't "booming". The industry I'm in has suffered hiring shortages for years. We keep increasing pay, desperate to get people in. The few we actually get are mainly two types: one that ends up spending all day on their fucking phones, and another that gets dragged in by their mommies (who also fill out the applications for them). THIS IS INDUSTRY WIDE. We finally decided to go to schools before graduation and we hope most of them will make it to be something worthwhile. Goddamn I've spent years dealing with this hiring shit and motherfuckers go around talking about "nobody is giving me a job".
Still waiting to hear what industry you're in. You got real quiet when asked.

Every time I've visited the US, no matter if it's Los Angeles, Orlando, Houston, San Diego, Seattle or Portland, I see 'We're Hiring' announcements everywhere. There are plenty of jobs, what's lacking of course are 20h per week cushy office jobs with a generous wage. The fact wages have less purchasing power than before is the fault of the government and general economic trends, not the fault of companies.
There are some stores that have told me they're not actually hiring, in spite of what the sign outside says. They say they're required to put it on their stores if any locations are hiring, which makes no fucking sense but it's happened to me in two completely different places now.
