After quite a lot reading this thread today, my mind kept thinking that clip of the "nihilist penguin." It's from a documentary by Werner Herzog. Sometimes a penguin will "just go crazy because they've had enough of their colony."
Herzog continues, "One of them caught our eye. He would neither go towards the feeding grounds at the edge of the ice, nor return to the colony." The little guy heads straight towards the mountains. Even if one were to place him back with the colony, he'll immediately go back to mountains, turning his back on the colony.
"The rules for the humans are do not disturb or hold up the penguin. Stand still and let him go on his way."
"And here he is heading off into the vast interior of the continent. With 5,000 km ahead of him, he is heading towards certain death."
