So the problem for me is "Furry" used to mean just being a fan of anthropomorphic Animal characters like Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Star Fox, etc... But nowadays people only see the overtly degenerate side of "Furry" and use that as the entire definition of the word.

It is technically possible for someone to be a "furry" (a fan of anthropomorphic animals) without also being a "furry fetishist" (jacking off to said characters). That would be someone whose interest in anthropomorphic characters is purely nonsexual. I imagine it was more common before pornography became so readily available and the closest thing to "furry" were painted plates with bunnies in Victorian outfits, but these days... I think a quick browse through Animal Control (or the frontpage of any given furry gallery site, for that matter) would be evidence enough that the existence of a non-sexual furry is theoretical at best.

Not really. As much as the common consensus on KF is that every furry is a porn addled coomer, the little research I have seen suggests otherwise [1]. Keep in mind this research is from 2013-14, so a bit old. Come to your own conclusions. I agree that the fandom is pretty degenerate & lawless.
I still think that someone who is a "normie" can like anthropomorphic characters with animal heads in a non-sexual way, and not be "furry" -- like how a casual Star Wars fan may think Chewie looks cool -- while at least these days "furries" are only those who are sexually aroused by such characters (ew).
