It's set in like Boston IIRC, a heavily Catholic city and a center of New England Protestantism as well, which is... not at all like the fundamentalist Islamic style Christianity in the book. (Christian groups, at least Baptists, are pointed out in the book as being in resistance against the Gilead regime.)

In the book itself it's even hinted that it was the last gasp of reactionaries since it's pointed out that the USA fell apart after it. Unlike Iran, which is still strongly together and Islamic nearly 50 years after the Revolution.

I've run across at least one liberal text wall about this book every month for the past decade, and this is (of course) the first time I've ever seen anybody mention that in-book the largest denomination of Christians was against sex slaves. I'm not surprised, 99% of them never read a book. Why pay attention to any kind of nuance when they're just looking for victimization porn.
