Vance, Homan and others warned Musk to fire Vivek after Trump screamed at Vivek for insulting his voterbase and told him to fuck off.
After this I think Musk was on borrowed time, I remember reading somewhere they locked him out of meetings as everyone was pissed.

My guess is that he thought he was more popular than Trump and did this as a gambit to steal the spotlight without realizing that most people think he's a weird-yet-helpful sperg at best.
