People have and always will want a tyrant for *their* interests. Because for most it is the closest they will get to the power to impose their will on society and the world, without the risks that come with true anarchy.
Neither Left nor Right actually gives a shit about "tyranny", they give a shit about the friend-enemy distinction. Basic tribalism defined by common interests, which itself is defined by shared individual interests, that's all politics ever has been or will be. It's why the Left cheers the death of Ashley Babbitt and Austin Metcalf, and the Right cheers the death of George Floyd and that bridge Troon.
Every American used to have multiple things in common, God, ancestry, language, shared history, a real community that goes beyond saying hi to the guy down the street once a week. Now half the country only has the currency they use and a piece of paper saying they're American in common with the other half. That's a recipe for disaster, civil war, in any system that claims public involvement in government. There is no longer one primary national tribe with broadly common interests and a shared fate, and we all know it.
America can no longer reconcile that with the reality of its current political and economic situations. Both sides should just be honest that neither of them are protecting democracy or freedom, they simply want the power to execute their will for themselves and their tribal patrons.
If you want to be a moral idealist, you're living in the wrong Universe for that.
