To be brief, California taxpayers affected by this could potentially receive an IRS notice that they underpaid their Federal Tax obligation for 2025 and they would be on the hook to pay the difference with penalties and interest possibly tacked on. And we all know how unhappy taxpayers get when they expect a refund and instead get told they have a balance due. Whether the anger is directed at Newsom for his boneheaded move or if its deflected to Trump as Orange Man Bad would remain to be seen.
I think if its CLEAR, INTENTIONAL acting on NEWSOMS part, and especially the govt, they could instead just seize from him / govt the amount owed. Seize his home, his cars, govt buildings, state workers (who were in on it) houses, cars, basically just seize and auction off property of ANYONE directly connected with it. This is common enough solution and it wouldn't needlessly fuck over residents. You could also do the same with people assaulting federal forces, just seize and seize and sieze, auction it, and make the money back
This also comes into how they handle doing it, just not giving money, just not forwarding it? new tax forms? I suspect the money would still be recorded, but if hes still COLLECTING federal taxes and just pocketing it, thats pretty much treason and I think could potentially even get the death penalty paired with fighting federal forces, since its theft of federal property AND using it as a weapon.
I think trump is savvy enough to not piss off the common man needlessly, but anyone who works in govt right now and would be pushed into doing ANYTHING related to fucking with the tax code, I would UNIRONICALLY quit your job immediately if it looks like thats really going to happen and work at jack in the box. You will rupture savings but its better than everything you own being seized
