This is based on an average salary of 250,000 yen a month with $1US = 144.715 yen which is a shit exchange rate at the moment. Just for comparison when I was there last it was about $1 US = 120 yen which would have put at $25K still low for Tokyo standards but then this was about 10 years ago so things were cheaper.

He went to Japan to be an English ALT, and one of the first posts he made was going over his prep and everything for the trip. He said that after he subtracted rent and living expenses, he wouldn't be making anywhere near enough money for it to be viable long term, and that he was really just doing it for the experience. Iirc, most of the money he spent for sightseeing and tourism things came out of his savings. I'll try to remember which webcomic it was and see if I can find the blog. He did a pretty good job with documenting his experience.

And that's how most people look at it. They take it as a year or two in Japan, soak up some of the culture, tool around for a bit, see the sites and then go home with stories and memories. You can't really live on that kind of salary especially in Tokyo. And those that do have side hustles and ways to make more money.
