Undertale

Yeah, I loved that!
WHY WAS IT SPEAR OF JUSTICE?!

I love leitmotifs, don't me wrong, I fucking love the little details in the Undertale soundtrack, like how you can hear Heartache in Asgore's theme, but you can't heart any of his theme in Heartache. It mirrors how she can live without him, but he can't stop thinking about her. But, I digress, it was... Odd? To me? To hear Hammer of Justice, and know Gerson was the shopkeeper in Waterfall, and Undyne was kidnapped... What does it mean?

Is it like [Big Shot] having Battle Against A True Hero and The World Revolving mixed in? To give us the idea of what Gerson was supposed to be?
In Undertale Gerson tells you that Undyne used to follow him around when she was a kid. It was pretty much silently confirmed in his fight that he trained Undyne, which is why he's got a more advanced version of the green soul mechanic, along with spear of justice in his song.

I have been trying to play through Deltarune chapters 1 and 2 to remember everything before starting chapter 3, and it's taking me significantly longer than I had expected. I should have replayed the chapters two weeks ago when I had time.

Is it worth trying to remain spoiler free?
Yeah, I think so. Outside of the secret boss of chapter 3 requirements, there's not really any reason to look at spoilers.
Some of the fights, jokes and story beats lose a lot of their impact if viewed a second time. Once you're done with chapter 4, you can go secret hunting to spoil yourself all you want, some of them are extremely autistic to find.

Played Undertale, enjoyed it
Played Deltarune chapters 1 and 2 and enjoyed them but not as much, figuring it was because it wasn't complete.

Chapters 3 and 4 are out now and I honestly would rather just watch playthroughs of it. I don't even care about spoilers, I've been reading a lot of them here. Undertale really felt like it was an experience best enjoyed by playing the game, this just sounds like a big gay easter egg hunt that i'll never have time for unless I channel THAT much 'tism into it. Undertale had a feeling where the secrets and hidden gems added onto the experience, Deltarune feels like the secrets are the main event. Like, in order to enjoy it I HAVE to have things spoiled or else I feel like I'm missing out. On top of that, the whole narrative feels blackpilled as all hell. When chapter 2 ended I thought things were kinda improving for these characters but I guess not?

The more I see, the more it comes off as a furry therapy session. I want to feel in control when I play a game, not this boo-hoo I'm an emo cutter rapist and it's not my fault. I'm a victim shit, like dude what the fuck?

yeah you can really tell that certain scenes were written by someone whose main source of inspiration for dialogue was sonic sez

and not in a funny or ironic way.

ch4 was a lot better than ch3 but the idea of big dark fountains becoming "titan" eldritch horrors that need to be killed from the inside by muh chosen one is a really tired cliche perpetrated by every shitty shonen anime these days and will be a permanent stain on the writing from now on, it really doesnt fit the deltarune universe as a concept at all other than being a jap trope. either theyre gonna do it again later (god please no it sucks SO BAD) or they will be struggling to explain why not. like why cant the roaring knight just create 5 of these and go on a vacation while kris spends the next 4 chapters fighting this stand-in big bad? i cant stress enough how much i think this was a terrible fucking idea with awful consequences for the story and i hate whoever came up with it.

also the phonecalls received by kris are stupid and written too heavy handed and ruin the whole mystery around whats wrong with him. especially the one in the weird route at noelles house where theres a full fucking minute of "dialogue" repetitively telling kris to sabotage his friends. i thought the fucking point was that kris hates being controlled by the soul (you) but now that doesnt matter because hes working with someone who orders him around anyway.

honestly the deltarune universe is steadily becoming a clusterfuck even without considering the overlap with undertale. this was my main concern with toby blowing up the scope of the game and hiring additional writers, that old plot points would be abandoned while shitty new ones are introduced. as gay as it is to admit this i really liked undertale and the reason im playing deltarune at all is to answer some of the big questions that undertale never did. i really dont want this game to turn into an animeslop main story blindly aping 2023 seasonal anime trends while the undertale setting is reduced to a backdrop.

thats why so far my favorite thing about ch3-4 has been that they explained entry 17 in a way that actually makes sense but now im left praying for them to do something interesting with it.

Speaking of trannies, I saw some retard making fanart of the moon guy and cloud sheep featuring the troon flag and decided to make a quick check to the wiki and... Oh my, check this shit out.
I think it was Toby just not understanding Spanish and using it badly, as many Americans do. I dunno if that sequence was a parody of tranny relationships with trios and such, as the couple goes back together. Funnily enough, the attack you choose makes either the guy OR the gal be the one responsible for the break-up, not just the guy, which I didn't expect.
As for Toriel's parenting, TBF monsters aren't human, so the monsters being unable to deal with a depressed kid is fitting. Darkners are moving metaphors of RL objects so they don't even count as "true" living beings IMO, seeing some state they can't change. Ralsiel is special because of his MC status.
This reminds me of Mother 3 once again, where the villagers didn't know how to deal with Lucas and Flint's grief and forget about them, especially the former, because they had been brainwashed to return to a very primitive mentality. Fortunately for Lucas, he had a hero's willpower so he shrugged it off, unlike the cry-babies of UT/DR.

And yeah, Chapter 4's stakes have increased a bit too much, possibly to anime levels, and we'll see if Toby walks back from that, as future bosses will have to top that, and the Knight is implied to be stronger than that boss. A single Titan is overwhelming and it can reproduce asexually by spawning its brood non-stop, so multiple Titans would likely start expanding out of control and increase the Dark Fountain's effects to affect more and more of the real world, so this would be a catastrophe...
Which is probably what will happen at some point.
TBF, Undertale's final boss is also a standard anime god-like being.

i dont think thats a fair comparison, that one heavily drew on the metagaming 4th wall break fuckery which at least made it a bit less predictable and therefore interesting. here theyre trying to introduce this as a fully in-universe thing which just sucks.
not even kidding its so fucking lame if you told me toby was forced to add it because some out of touch exec at sony or nintendo thought it was super cool and epic i would 100% believe you

They had the perfect opportunity to have mettaon in chapter 3
You give him the tv in chapter 4 and he's referenced already in chapter 2 via Spamton neo.
And yeah, Chapter 4's stakes have increased a bit too much
Its not needed to constantly escalate things but rather treat it like roller coasters.
Chapter 5 could be a little less serious than 4 and have slightly lower stakes, chapter 6 be a build-up for chapter 7 who will serve as a grand finale. I feel like next chapter will be about Asgore, Dess and whatever happened to those 2, or at least a partial version of that story.

lol can you fucking imagine?
I feel like something is definitely going to be up with the traditional pacifist route this time. It seems on brand for this game to take the metaknowledge people are going to approach it with and flip the script so that Snowgrave or Neutral lead to the golden ending rather than the traditional true pacifist.
When chapter 2 ended I thought things were kinda improving for these characters but I guess not?
The game has seven chapters, we just now got to four. If the game maintained such a lighthearted tone and things were already improving for them by the second the game would have absolutely nowhere to take its narrative.

I get the complaints about the long wait and things being a bit too obscure but not this one too much. If anything CH 3 being more funny funny haha for 89% of its runtime was wearing thin for me personally.

I didn't dislike Chapter 3/4, these are still games that I enjoy playing in a time where I rarely enjoy new video games. There's a definite watered-down quality to the story and dialog though. Sometimes it feels like characters are talking just to talk. Which made sense for Tenna, he talks and bombards with games because he's desperate. These were the first games in the series that felt like a "Mystery Box Show"; the end of the episode sets up new questions on a cliffhanger, parts of which are resolved at the beginning of the next episode, and then the content of the episode is just noise that has nothing to do with the overarching mystery.

I don't delve deep into lore or theory, so I don't really have opinions on the knight or titans other than they are strikingly different than the majority of bosses in Undertale/Deltarune where you know who you're fighting, why you're fighting them, and have a personal reason for not wanting to harm them (because you like them or at least have empathy for them).

i've just realized
by removing the rose, doesn't it make deflowering permanent?
his response to the rose losing its petals was to remove all traces of it after it happening
he could've just.... kept the rose and not make it do that, but he instead made its fate a further degradation of it
by removing it, he basically makes it so it can't be seen through any playthrough in anyone's game

he de-flower'd the game 💀
Wait was a scene removed or it just never made it in?

Most people don't give a singular fuck.
Just tell them "Don't care, didn't ask"
Kris is clearly a fucking He, and it's baffling to think otherwise.
Like, I can see an argument to be made for Frisk and maybe Chara considering those two characters didn't actually have a character at all.

Kris is clearly his own character, the "they/them" shit is actually the heart enforcing mental illness upon him by psychopaths that ruin peoples lives as a game. Bravo Tobias. Amazing meta-commentary.
Agreed. I remember the main point with the Simpson kid (Frisk) was that "they" are young, so it can be a boy or a girl. Back then you could feel the mess it was going to be. I fucking despise the singular "they" so much that I feel like sperging and asking if said people have demonic possession or something.

Speaking of Metatton EX, it seems to me that Deltatroon is having more variations of xim, through Spamaton and now this gameshow faggot.

As in, outside the examples in this franchise?
It wasn't in the franchise, but everywhere you go.
>Kris and Frisk are they/them not because they have pronouns, but because they are both LITERALLY TWO NIGGAS
Oh my god... I figured it out...
TOBYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Lmao, reading this while I was listening to this was hilarious:

Wait was a scene removed or it just never made it in?
it was a very short (~2 seconds) animation of a red rose shedding its petals in an otherwise black screen, it was replaced with a red dot because in the minds of the deltatroon reddit theres no way this could just be a "shock" or "disaster" reaction, no it has to mean RAPE RAPE RAPE SEX RAPE ANAL RAPE SEX IN MUH KIDS GAME so it had to go immediately to protect the feelings of these people (who have never had sex btw)

symbolically that is what a flower losing its petals means. Plants once pollinated shed their petals and become fruit (pregnant)

Did he? That would explain the massive drop in quality if the nigga isn't even writing his own game anymore
1749562545822.webp

from the chapter 4 credits sequence. im not saying all these people are writing tobys game for him, but i can pretty confidently say that between the decline in dialogue quality, the clear development and scope issues and shit i found on wikipedo about toby allegedly being unable to type on a keyboard due to physical health problems, theres no way hes writing the game alone
