I know, that took me aback! But good treatment of children should likely be closer to how you would treat a parent with dementia. Sometimes forcibly controlling their body is necessary to prevent damage to themselves or others, and you definitely don’t let them go outside alone, and there will certainly be many grey areas where you’re conflicted about how much to override their agency. I feel like I’m in absolute crazytown that everyone seems to think the school system is okay. You’re pouring the most vivid years of someone’s life into the fucking drain, forcing them to sit and wait and stare at walls and spend their attention focusing on stuff that most of them don’t care about at all, and will barely remember afterwards. This is how you treat property, not people.

There's very little compassion, leeway or respect for dignity & free will for the way we warehouse the demented in the West. Aella's substack post really doesn't help her cause. Her argument boils down to "Yes, getting molested sucked, but you know what else sucks? Being forced to eat vegetables!" The problem with her dumb argument is that a parent making a child go to bed early or to eat healthy food is not actually hurting or confusing the child. They might not like it at the time, but these things are healthy and good for children, and as the child matures, they will come to see that too. They will not grow up and act dysfunctional because they got a full nights sleep or ate a nutricious dinner.

Her pointing to a small and unheard of tribe with their weird sexual norms doesn't mean shit, there are also cultures that would burn Aella alive for being a whore, but something tells me she isn't going to point to them as being examples we should follow.

It would have gotten her away from parents she claims were abusive.

She would have had to (probably) persevere through something she wasn’t immediately good at or interested in, a skill we know she lacks.

She might have realized that she isn’t good at everything and some people are smarter than her.

Maybe she would end up with more routine and discipline than she has.

She would have been exposed to a greater variety of ideas which may have helped her form her own opinions more slowly and in a more nuanced way instead of doing a 180.

Idk it’s just wild to me that she says her christian homeschooling parents were abusive and repressive yet being homeschooled by them was the best thing ever and school is child abuse.
