To be fair, most English ALT contracts in Japan are for a year, although the companies have the option of extending your contract or granting you a new one once your current expires if they like you and you do a good job (by Jap standards). I looked into it when I was younger, along with reading some blogs from people who did it. If you’re younger and have some money saved up (or parents who are wealthy) it’s not a bad way to experience Japan, as you get both a worker and a tourist’s perspective on the country. In my old age, I’d much prefer to go over for a couple weeks or a month for some touring, rather than deal with their weird ass work ethos.

A permament VISA requires 10 years total, with half of that being on a work VISA (five straight years and/or five year residency status), you also need to have a strong connection to the community you're in (they'll look for things like family, secure employment, how involved in the community you are) though it should be noted that being married and having kids doesn't mean you'll automatically get it, you can't have a criminal record, you need to have completely integrated into Japanese society (both culturally and customs), you'll also need to be fluent in Japanese (like having actual conversations about wide range of conversational stuff) along with paying into taxes and social security. There's a few other things, but I won't go into the full details of it.

It's not cumulatively, if it was, you'd have people claiming time spent there on vacation as part of the time living there. Japan wants people who will actually integrate into the country and not just be an outsider living there while acting like it's America. But Cheebs does think of the long-term consequences, he just thinks they won't happen to him because he "knows better." He doesn't really think this whole Japan arc will end badly because he really wants it and has little grasp of the Japanese language. They won't. The government of Japan makes that very clear to foreigners with actual relationships. Being married and having kids is just one part of the requirements. Getting divorced for any reason or losing your job will absolutely fuck you too.
