France is moving to classify X as a pornographic website, a designation that would place it under the country’s mandatory age verification and digital ID laws.

This step, if finalized, would force the company to either implement robust age-gating mechanisms or restrict access to adult content altogether to avoid being cut off from younger users.

It would also mean that users have to show ID to access the platform, introducing major implications for privacy and free speech.

The push comes amid broader efforts by the French government to strengthen protections for minors online. Digital Minister Clara Chappaz’s office told POLITICO that “X has indicated since 2024 that it accepts the distribution of pornographic content. It must therefore be treated as such.”

Her team is currently assessing whether X should fall under the decree that governs pornography sites, which mandates age verification for all users.

Chappaz addressed the matter during a Thursday appearance on the television show Quotidien, stating that the platform will soon receive “the same pretty papers as YouPorn,” indicating formal notification to comply with the country’s laws targeting adult content.

Under French law, any platform offering pornographic material must verify users’ ages or face penalties. These range from financial sanctions and delisting from search engines to outright access blocks. Platforms were given until June 7 to comply.

Several are pushing back, arguing that the technical and privacy implications of such requirements remain unresolved.

Access to three major adult platforms: Pornhub, YouPorn, and RedTube, was cut off in France this month, as the sites’ owner, Aylo, pushes back against government-imposed digital ID mandates.

Instead of their usual content, French users will encounter a message condemning the country’s requirements as invasive and ineffective.

According to Proton, VPN use has skyrocketed in the country as a result of the shutdown.

The move is Aylo’s response to new rules that require adult websites to confirm that visitors are over 18, either through ID documents or credit card information.

The French government insists this is essential to prevent minors from viewing explicit material, but Aylo has refused to comply, citing significant risks to user privacy and the dangers of mass data collection.

France’s approach, introduced in stages over the past year, mandates that adult sites employ age checks handled by a third party. This setup is intended to shield the platforms from accessing any personal information about their users, but digital ID data is still seen by the third party, many of such companies that have lobbied governments to introduce digital ID laws.

Aylo disputes both its effectiveness and its safety, warning that the system leaves sensitive data exposed to potential breaches, leaks, or misuse.

  4. Disney, Universal Launch AI Legal Battle, Sue Midjourney Over Copyright Claims

1749670286235.webp1749671560178.webp

In the next chapter of Big Entertainment vs. Big Tech, Disney and Universal have filed a lawsuit against artificial intelligence company Midjourney over tools that allow users to create images and videos that can manipulate famous characters at the click of a prompt.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on Wednesday by Disney Enterprises, Marvel, Lucasfilm, 20th Century, Universal City Studios Productions and DreamWorks Animation, describes the David Holz-run generative AI firm Midjourney as a “bottomless pit of plagiarism.”
The legal salvo marks the first major foray from Hollywood against tech giants that are hoping to reorient consumer habits with personalized entertainment and information by vacuuming up data on the internet and spitting it out in the form of chatbot copy or images. So far, Wall Street has bet big that AI will be a major economic driver in the future and AI companies have raised tens of billions of dollars to realize that vision.

Notably, major film and TV studios have not yet inked significant deals with AI companies to license their IP to these tech giants’ tools that are now used by millions of users. That marks a different tack from major media companies, which have largely decided to take checks to license content to companies like OpenAI versus spend millions fighting in court. (The New York Times is an exception, and it has spent $10 million-plus fighting OpenAI so far.)

The complaint from Disney and Universal details how Midjourney’s tools easily allow users to create image-based works based on the intellectual property of Disney and Universal — think: Darth Vader or Shrek at the beach, etc. This is commonly called “AI Slop,” and many likely already see it in their social media feeds.

“If a Midjourney subscriber submits a simple text prompt requesting an image of the character Darth Vader in a particular setting or doing a particular action, Midjourney obliges by generating and displaying a high quality, downloadable image featuring Disney’s copyrighted Darth Vader character,” the complaint reads.

The complaint offers AI-generated images of Vader, Wall-E, Stormtroopers, How to Train Your Dragon characters, Minions and Shrek and many more as evidence of copyright infringement perpetuated by Midjourney. And it singles out Star Wars character Yoda with a side-by-side comparison:
The Hollywood studios go on to allege that Midjourney is able to provide such outputs because its tools have already ingested copyrighted intellectual property across the web as training data. “Midjourney downloaded from the internet, and other sources, content using tools variously described as bots, scrapers, streamrippers, video downloaders, and web crawlers,” the complaint says, alleging that the AI company’s CEO David Holz “admitted that to collect the training data, Midjourney ‘pulls off all the data it can, all the text it can, all the images it can.'”

The studios also claim that Midjourney then “cleaned” and converted digital files of copyrighted intellectual property to use in its training data so that its tools could then provide outputs allowing users to create things like personalized Yoda, Vader or Shrek images. “When a subscriber enters a prompt for an image of Spider-Man, Minions, Iron Man, or any of Plaintiffs’ countless copyrighted characters, Midjourney creates yet another copy of that character which it publicly displays and/or distributes via download,” the complaint reads.
The lawsuit highlights that not only does Midjourney allow the creation of these works based on Disney and Universal’s copyrighted characters, the AI company goes further by having them displayed in its “Explore” section of its website — a sign that, the studios say, Midjourney is fully aware of what its product does and is capitalizing on the plagiarism.

“Midjourney’s publication and curation of infringing images on the Explore page show that Midjourney knows that its platform regularly reproduces Plaintiffs’ Copyrighted Works, and that the Explore page is intended to advertise Midjourney’s ability to infringe the Copyrighted Works,” the complaint reads.

And the complaint goes on to alleged that Midjourney has the tools in place to prevent outputs that run afoul of copyrighted intellectual property, but it choose to not enact them. “Midjourney controls, and has the ability to control, generative outputs through readily available technical protection measures,” the studios argue. “Despite having the ability to do so, Midjourney has affirmatively chosen not to use copyright protection measures to limit the infringement.”

The top legal officer of Disney put it more simply in a strongly-worded statement accompanying the lawsuit: “Piracy is piracy.” Using that phrasing frames the fight against Midjourney in familiar language to the studios’ lobbying group, the Motion Picture Association, which also talks up its fight against piracy. But the MPA, so far, has mostly gone after websites that show unauthorized movies and TV shows, not AI companies, despite the prevalence of users flocking to AI-powered tools.

“Our world-class IP is built on decades of financial investment, creativity and innovation—investments only made possible by the incentives embodied in copyright law that give creators the exclusive right to profit from their works,” stated Disney general counsel Horacio Gutierrez. “We are bullish on the promise of AI technology and optimistic about how it can be used responsibly as a tool to further human creativity. But piracy is piracy, and the fact that it’s done by an AI company does not make it any less infringing.”

I will say Josh is getting better about letting a bit go on too long, there have been a couple lately, I think there was one iDubbbz one. But not compared to a 2020 one I listened to for Shanny, It just went on, and on and on. And since I was driving it was hard to just fast forward. And then the next stream came on and it was a similarly long Ralph segment, I just about drove off the road to end it all, or at least so I could fast forward it.

Ireland is again experiencing mass anti-immigrant rioting. This time by Ulster-Scots Loyalists instead of Irish Nationalists in response to a teenage girl being raped by gypsies. A mob formed and started firebombing their homes in the town. Loyalists historically are known to do this to groups that piss them off too badly. The "Roma Community" of the townland is fleeing their homes currently to somewhere else.

I got pulled over once skipping through MATI. The officer asked me what I was doing on my phone and I am an honest American and told him I was listening to mad at the Internet. He simply asked me "Was he late and gay?" And I told him the truth. He sighed and shook his head. He told me he likes this guy called Cardlumbo some sort of detective show, but he understands why I had to be skipping into the show and let me go without a warning.

Are we going to have a MATI episode ever again? I'm dangerously productive at work Josh.
Not only that, but the ruined orgasm of having the best 2 lolcow weeks in years met with total silence from my favorite lolcow podcast has left me dangerously agnostic about whether it's even worth being a weirdo on the internet anymore (:_(

Edit to add: If null doesn't do a detailed feature on both the new Idubbz and Foodie Beauty stuff, I will be very sad because they're both at the funniest they've been in a long time right now.

Chibi, the guy who everyone would really prefer if he would be quiet, and the one who exposed his asscrack on Japanese television after getting interviewed at the airport, has announced that he will be moving to Japan, probably to teach English or something. He also said he will be moving to Tokyo, but his contract did not include any accommodations or insurance or benefits, so he's basically on his own (he probably has no close friends in country because he is a sperglord autist).

While that is kind of funny, the real funny part is, a former coworker has posted pages and pages of Chibi's text messages in their work's group chat. @scotchtape772572 is the account. However, he fucked up and accidentally uploaded his own personal goon folder TWICE! Much like local mushmouth Russel Greer accidentally uploading gooner material in his legal filings against mysterious billionaire Tzoach Mun. However he did deliver the messages after this colossal fuckup so everyone clapped, and we thank him for his service.
Well done [REDACTED], we appreciate it

I think it might be funny if you read some of Chibi's messages on stream, in order to demonstrate what the average Switch 2 owner does and says.

I don't think that you covered Bossman getting arrested because it happened right after the last stream you did.

Since this is something that's related to what you've had to deal with it might be interesting. The UK is investigating 4chan because it's not complies with OFCOM.

The big feature of Mario Kart World is having to drive from your current race track to the next one, so there's a fake off-road race where you might find collectibles between levels? Not a feature that'll make me buy the same system twice. Eat a dick, Miyamoto. Though I give them credit for trying to do anything new with kart racers, the first company to make a dating sim between races is going to make a mint. Nintendo was already halfway there, putting the princesses in latex bodysuits and then bending them over on rice rockets.

Seeing Asmongold roast him was pretty funny, he has to lurk here.

DSP and Ethan Klein were both hyping the game on youtube, bragging about their first wins, not realizing they were against bots sandbagging to make boomers feel good and get hooked with an early win. Fortnite realy popularized this gaming trend, but it's funny to see it happen to two different lolcows back-to-back

Well, the bots in games are fun. I think splitgate 2 does this and I was having a blast. It wasn't super easy or sweaty, felt just right. Suddenly everything became just die hard sweaty. Nobody was even using portals they're just zooming around the arena and shit. all these damn kids are hopped up on amphetamines. I'll peacefully play with my bots and pretend they're real people just like the old days
