Ahmedabad plane crash live updates: Air India plane crashes in Gujarat

An Air India passenger plane crashed shortly after taking off at Ahmedabad Airport. As per reports, at least 242 passengers were on board.

Some details from the Daily Mail.

Air India Flight 171 carrying 242/244 passengers and crew, parts of the jet have crashed into the BJ Medical College and Civil Hospital.

The aircraft reached a height of 625 feet before descending,

No word on survivors. Weather conditions reportedly clear skies, windspeed 7 knots.

Director General of India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau and team of investigators are enroute.

That's horrifying. Imagine minding your own business, cooking some curry while one of your 24 brothers is scamming boomers on Windows XP or shitting in a bucket, while out of sudden you get randomly 9/11'd and your entire world comes to an end.
I'm sure they were just as shocked as the passengers were. No one probably expected they would die in the time, place and way they did. Seeing tomorrow is never a guarantee, neither are the hours, minutes and seconds to come.

On the (debatably) bright side of things a good amount of them did die instantly or within in a short amount of time so they didn't suffer very long but at the same time there are reports of survivors so I'm sure they aren't feeling too great right now.

I guarantee you they’ll find poo in the engine, because some Jeet mechanic had to take a shit, never wiped and started handling the turbine blades.

It’s honestly an act of god that you don’t see plane crashes on a weekly basis in India.
You call it an act of god, I call it an act of American Engineering and Ingenuity.
To Jeets, there is no difference.

From the footage it looks like death would have been unexpected to most of those on board - unless you were a pilot, crew or in a window seat you may not even have known the plane was descending, the average passenger just isn’t that aware of what is happening or what different noises mean. Hopefully everyone was calm and settling into the flight, or at worst expecting a return to the airport. There was too many children on board to hope for anything different. The plane looked like it was about to land, not upside down or falling from the sky, no need to panic or go screaming into the long night. Absolute tragedy and I hope they find out the cause asap, there’s a lot of pain ahead for the victims families - we may have known about the crash before they did and that’s just horrific. Imagine sitting down for a browse on the web after dropping your wife and daughter at the airport. The internet truly is a cursed place sometimes.

Aside from “F
Aside from “F. Greenlaw” not a single non Jeet on the plane apparently.

A few of the passengers have “Accepted” instead of “Boarded”, which AFAIK means that they were accepted to board, but for some reason never made it aboard.

Holy shit, imagine missing your plane because you’re arguing with a fellow Jeet over curry or whatever. And on your way to rebook your ticket, you see the plane you were supposed to be on hit the ground in a massive fireball.

Our friends on Airliners.net are suggesting that the RAT (Ram Air Turbine) was deployed. Basically, the RAT is an emergency propeller that drops down in case of engine failure to provide power for the plane and hydraulics. If you listen to the video of the crash you can hear the buzz of a prop right as it passes overhead, notably not the roar of the engines at takeoff power. Comparing it to another 787 RAT deployment it does sound quite similar.

It’s a plane literally crammed with jeets.

I don’t know if you’ve ever had the questionable joy of flying in a plane like that, but I assure you nobody there was “calm”.

But yes, they were likely all too busy jabbering to each other/into their cellphone, arguing with fellow passengers and demanding free drinks and upgrades from the crew, to ever find out what was happening.
