I wonder what everyone’s thoughts are about this. It seems like the sin of ‘detraction’ (lol DSP mentioned) as described is pretty prohibitive-like would exclude discussions of ‘small time’ true crime or even deceased war criminals (if that could harm the reputation of living family members and the need to discuss their crimes isn’t urgent.)

I also don’t understand why the right to a neutral to positive reputation is being treated as almost equal to someone’s life or possessions. IDK I’m not a moral theologian though.

So they were/are called Gods chosen people. As I understand, this title has been transferred to Christians, but the original chosenness did not go away, as Gods promise is to be fulfilled.
At least this is what i've heard from a priest i've listened to recently.
Personally, I believe that God chooses the ones he wishes to be believe in him, hence Gods chosen and Jews don't exaclty qualify anymore since they have forsaken God, or Christ.
But, again, the relationship with God, can be argued, is very different with each person, in which case, even Satanists have a certain relationship with God, maybe not a positive but a sad one, but a relationship nonetheless, thus they believe in God and are as well chosen. The same works with Jews. They may have forsaken the New Testament/Christ but hold a relationship with God regardless.

Anyone have some more information/opinions and explanations regarding this?

The way I understand it is that it's treated as mortal sin in because you're "killing" the way someone is perceived, it's doing irreparable harm which is what makes it so severe, what people get overly cautious about is the severity of it though IMO.
Lolcows for example, I don't consider shitposting about them detraction, because nothing we do on this site isn't anything that hasn't already been done. This is in contrast to say bringing up someone's drinking problem, years after the fact, just to make them look bad; it's about intent mixed with actual consequence; if you ask any priest they'll explain this to you and also probably tell you to spend less time on the Internet.

There's no such thing as a common jew nowadays, at least where i'm at, and they used to be quite numerous and not some sort of boogeyman where you can only form an opinion from news and internet hearsay.

Quite the reverse; they have abandoned Him again (seemingly once and for all this time) by rejecting Christ, whom God sent for their salvation. Any severing of the relationship between God and the Jews is the fault of the Jews for failing to accept Christ.

I'm not even gonna get into the substantial ethnic, religious, and cultural differences between the Hebrews of the Bible and the modern day Jew, which gives the modern day Jew basically no claim to any of the promises God made to the Israelites of the Bible.

Yes, I am Catholic. Pretty sure you've been given the answer to your question anyway. I think it's extremely clear in Gospel what God feels towards people who don't accept Christ as their saviour.

The Hebrews and Israelites in the Bible aren't the Jews of today, the Jews of today are from the tribe of Judah, which wasn't the one that was blessed as the "Chosen People", the Hebrews/Israelites of the Bible that are blessed are from the tribe of Joseph, through Ephraim (Fruitful/Plentiful) and Manasseh (Forgetful), his sons, they are prophesied to be plentiful.
In Genesis 41:51, Joseph names his son Manasseh, saying, “God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household.

The tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh were part of the northern kingdom of Israel, which was conquered by the Assyrians in 722 BC. The inhabitants were exiled, and many assimilated into surrounding populations.

The blessed people of the OT are all of us, all the nations on Earth, through the tribe of Joseph, all people on earth have been blessed through the tribe of Joseph.

Some of the Hebrews of Judah joined Christianity, the rest became Pharisees, none of the Pharisees in the OT or NT are blessed by God, they deny God and his son, they are not the chosen people, the tribe of Joseph are, which became plentiful (all of earth) and forgetful (assimilated in all of us).

The blessings started with Noah, the eldest sons were blessed, Shem and Japheth (through being in the tent of Shem) but Ham, the youngest, was cursed. (Later Ham and his tribe became the Canaans, but that's another story)

Later on, through Noah to Shem/Japheth to all their descendants to Jacob, Judah received a significant blessing from Jacob in Genesis 49:8-12, prophesying leadership and royalty. Joseph also received a major blessing in Genesis 49:22-26, with prosperity and prominence for his descendants, and he was favored by Jacob, but Judah and his tribe wasn't cursed, or else the ones that decided to join in Christ wouldn't be saved. But the ones that aren't saved are the ones that denies Christ, the Pharisees, or the Jews that we know of today, which none of them are the chosen people, despite what they claim.
