what purpose would they have had to perpetrate this ruse from her daughter's funeral starting in the early 1930s onward? why would they bother? the 'oldest person alive' thing wasn't even a thing we cared about until like the 80s, it was just some niche trivia. how would they have manipulated an entire town to lie about the daughter's funeral to the paper that recorded it in arles? it's not like it was one or two people, it was a lot. it was documented.
unless there's suspicion of a crime, or a reason to question why your family member died, there's usually not an autopsy done, especially when you're over 100 and the family doesn't care for it. some people don't want their relative's body sliced open for no reason other than "gee, wonder what made nana, age 122, croak."

The proof that she really lived that long is an article from a week later that says there was a "partulicularly large group" that went to the funeral so it totally happened. The article is supported by some totally accurate math that states "someone has a 1 in ten million chance to live past 120" so that means she did. Pretty clearly bullshit if you put in 5min of work. I can't even find the article from 1934 that the "study" says exists.
It's more due to the fact that Protestantism lost its coherence. Back when WASPs were strongly Calvinist, they persecuted the Catholic Irish and Italians, and they added Catholic Germans to the mix, especially during Prohibition. But as Protestantism lost its coherence over the years and got less dogmatic, WASPs fell away and either became Evangelicals or even Catholic. Could be lots of reasons taxes, inheritance, some sort of family secret where they needed her to be alive so they assumed her identity. It's also a consequence of the potential reason. She wasn't trying to be the world's oldest person. That's absurd to even argue. However when you suddenly take 30 years off your biological age it becomes a whole lot easier. It's not like you can't find cases where people have lived under false identities for long periods of time. I'm not sure why its so far fetched that people 100 years ago did it when it was more easy to do back then.
I dunno but if my family member died as the oldest living human ever recorded that's a pretty great reason to get an autopsy. I think most people, especially scientists would be very interested in having this once in a life time chance to see the state of your body after 122 years. The only reason you'd not have an autopsy at that point is if you're actually 99 but have been pretending to be 122.
